View Full Version : Geek Corner Break Time: What is your OS?

Since Ron Paul "only exists on the internet" lets take a break and take a poll of what software us Paulites use.
I use an x86_64 multilib derivative of cross Linux from scratch I've dubbed CCBUX. I'm hoping to release it as a generally available distribution by Fall of next year. It's mainly designed for the enterprise, with an emphasis on data centers. Basically its key design goal is rapid deployments and updates of large groups of similar servers. For instance a database replication cluster or a load balanced web cluster should require just one action to upgrade or install a software package across all members of an identical group. Since I'm in the business of credit card processing, this entire distribution is embedded with GRSecurity (http://www.grsecurity.net). That means every software package must ship with it's own GRSec policies.
At home, I run CCBUX adapted for a desktop. I use Enlightenment DR17 for my desktop, but I'm also "supporting" KDE, gnome, fluxbox, blackbox, and TWM in the "releases" I've offered so far.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun to take a look at where we all stand in the software world.
Oh, and BTW for any Amiga, VMS, etc users out there. The Poll capped me at 10 entries.

Should have been multiple choice. I have a WinXP/Ubuntu desktop, a WinXP/Slackware laptop, a Slackware web server and a Slackware file server.

Other/others
I have PCLinuxOS/XP on the main house box and my laptop. Both are HP.
I have Ubuntu CE on an old IBM that I am testing for the Church basement.
Currently have Zenwalk on a frankenputer.
On the Dual boot, I haven't used XP in quite some time. I prefer PCLinuxOS.

I have Vista on 1 desktop. Used to have it on my business machine also, but went back to XP. It was too much of a resource hog, and too buggy for the stability I needed to work on a pc all day long with several different programs. Biggest issue was MS Office 07 applications would just crash for no apparent reason, requiring a total reboot. Also, it was sluggish even with 2gb of RAM.

hahahahah Does that mean you use some anonymous web-surfing program? If not, every server you go to knows what OS you run.

I voted for Ubuntu because I use 64bit Ubuntu at home. At work I am stuck on a XP machine. I sometimes use my wife's Vista32bit laptop.
I prefer Ubuntu currently, not saying it's the best or anything. I just like it for my own personal use.

Fedora. It still kicks my ass from time to time and I have a solid computer background. Lets just say Linux is not quite ready for prime time. It does work well, it can just be hard to configure.

Vista Ultimate. Not to sure about it though. NSA helped Microsoft develop it.

Primarily Gentoo (2 workstations), but Ubuntu on the laptops. No Windows anywhere, anyhow, anytime.
Technically, I would consider Ubuntu a Debian derivative, which was one of your choices. :P

When I read your comment, Werdd, I actually clicked on your user profile to make certain that you weren't a troll. :) (I am not attacking you personally, but I've spent plenty of time on various Linux boards and a statement like that is a classic troller's bait there.) Here at ronpaulforums.com we naturally believe that everyone is entitled to choose for themselves which operating system is best for them, so I'll make no further comment!
I'm pleasantly surprised at the number of Free Software users here. Maybe the non-technical members of the forum are skipping a poll about operating systems, though, and the technical members are naturally more likely to use free software? You know we can't trust those $%*^#@ polls.

XP Professional! I also want to partition my hard drive for linux, but...I have little memory.
Sorry, but Vista has a nasty habbit of shutting down on me, and I'm afraid it might find all of my software that I didn't actually buy.
