I am in Nashville currently and a friend took me to a local airshow at the Smyrna airport. Smyrna is a smaller suburb from Nashville and has a decent sized airport. http://www.smyrnaairport.com/

It's a county airport and although it's only about 20 minutes away (by driving) from the Nashville Int'l airport a lot of industrial / shipping goes through there. I don't think they have any airline flights.

Here is a map showing the Smyrna vs the Nashville airport:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=bna&daddr=Smyrna,+TN+37167+(Smyrna)&hl=en&geocode=FW5RJwIdcILV-iFxBk6EGC3LDQ%3BFflrJQIdHgHY-iE0fRiFOSF7Tw&mra=pd&sll=35.860118,-86.699982&sspn=0.532005,1.234589&ie=UTF8&ll=36.099602,-86.55304&spn=0.265197,0.617294&z=11

Anyway, DHS "police" were all over the place, and specifically TSA agents in their blue shirts were rampant. Walking around "patrolling" the crowd.

It was a VERY disturbing sight for me since the only time one encounters these bluecoats is at the passenger security line. There was ZERO need for the TSA and DHS to be involved in this airshow. Local sheriff, police, etc would've been just fine to do the job needed.

How long until the TSA starts setting up and other random events? If the TSA can patrol an air show, is there anything they can't patrol?

So what's the threat? That terrorists are going to hijack prop planes at an airshow? Ridiculous.

Regarding the video, the message seems to be that these random security checkpoints (on greyhound buses??) will show the terrorists that we're in control. Doesn't this also mean that the rest of us will be considered guilty until proven innocent whenever the ABC alphabet soup agencies decide to flex some muscle?

Any sort of checkpoint or request for ID without probable cause means considering us guilty until proven innocent.

Exactly my point. It frustrates me whenever I see people like that guy in the video who decide "well, at least I know I'm safe" without any regard for their own rights or liberties.

Hah. Safe from what, exactly? I'd rather be safe from invasions of our inalienable rights to liberty and privacy.

What are you fools talking about? It only makes sense for the TSA to be patrolling buses. HAVE YOU PEOPLE NEVER SEEN SPEED???? SPEEEEEED? Kenya Reeves was trying to warn us about bombs on buses.

If the military was at all involved in the airshow, there would be some security. I've seen this at a variety of shows in the past, and it stands to reason that since the Government has created a higher-risk situation by announcing they shot Bin Laden and tossed him in the ocean, I'd expect a bigger presence. It's not usually hijackings that are the worry. It's the potential for so many people to be hiding a terrorist, who can shoot down a plane and have it cartwheel into the spectators. Leave it to the Government, however, to not realize that happens pretty often WITHOUT terrorist help.

But this type of security is for local sheriffs, police, etc, NOT the feds! grrr... :-(

Com'on this basic departmental show for funds or government 101.

Gotta justify those $10's of Billions stolen each year from the American taxpayers.

Nothing that elimination of the Department of Homeland Security and a mass firing of Federal employees won't fix.

Once again, those "fuck TSA, I won't fly folks" need to pay attention.

TSA is preparing to be everywhere.

This will become a common sight at a hundred different places, not just airports.

Jeezz.
I remember going to air shows in my youth.
On a SAC Base, and there were not more than a couple MPs. And they were hangin' out at their vehicles not patrolling.

There should have been droves of Tennesseans walking around with rifles across their shoulders, 5 for every TSA goon walking around with a badge. :(

people really do need to start standing up for their rights and refusing to let themselves be manhandled this way. if i try to go somewhere and they try to pull this shit, i am going to cause a scene.

No kidding? Matt, for several years now I've seen DHS police directing traffic and a church fund-raiser / BBQ. I'll try to remember to snap pics the next time I see it. There's this idea that "If ya gotta em then you might as well use em" here in mid TN.

Well I think it is conditioning. I can just see some bureaucrat at the TSA going "we need to have a strong presence out there so people are comfortable with us being around thus less resistant to us while at the airport"

Remember that if a TSA or other official stops you, you can always refuse to be searched and you have the option to just keep on minding your own business.
