Last week before Bin Laden was killed an average of 46% approved and 48% disapproved of Obama's job performance. Yesterday an average 51% approve and 43% disapprove.

On May 1 before the bin Laden story I read a story called Obama's Collapsing Base (http://www.newsweek.com/2011/05/01/obama-s-collapsing-base.html):

The president can't catch a break. Republicans loathe him, and now even old pals are bailing on the onetime Teflon commander in chief.
Supposedly UBL is killed and he gains 5 points. Maybe if he finds Amelia Earhart and refuses to show pictures, he can bump up another 2 points

gains from events that don't effect people are not long lasting; fake or real, be happy he played this ace now. next October he sure as hell can't play it again

You over-estimate the average American's intelligence.

If the wars still rage this bump will be long gone. It is actually a lot smaller of bumb than I was expecting for a big event like this.

I disagree with this, killing Bin Laden has shielded Obama from any soft on terrorism attacks Republicans could have thrown at him.

Now the only thing they'll be able to run on is the economy, and it's not as simple of an issue to campaign on than national security.

That explains why GOP is targetting Obama with "Misery Index" brought back from carter days:

Forget bin Laden; On economy, Obama approval hits new low
CBS News - Ken Millstone - ‎4 hours ago‎

Just 34 percent of Americans said in the CBS/Times poll that they approved of the way Obama was handling the economy, the lowest point since he took office. That figure also reflects a downward slide since mid-February.
