Pawlenty will be the most plausible candidate for the nomination on stage Thrusday night. The former Minnesota governor’s calm and reasoned demeanor will set him apart from the far-right firebrands who will be on stage. His biggest challenge will be to resist the temptation to be pulled too far to the right.
Santorum, Paul and Cain will undoubtedly be throwing rhetorical red meat to the South Carolina audience. Pawlenty has never shown the ability to compete with any of them as a performer and a showman. His strength is a good record of conservative policies from his tenure as governor of Minnesota. If he simply gives direct answers to the questions and does not get drawn into the contest for who can be the most outrageous conservative provocateur, it might be enough to make him a winner.
For the other four candidates on the stage the big debate is their best chance so far to make a winning impression on GOP voters. One of them could have a very big night and become the leader of the pack.
GOP primary voters tend to be more conservative just as Democratic primary voters tend to be more liberal. Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Ron Paul, Gary Johnson and Buddy Roemer are generally far to the right and wildcards. Their unabashed rhetoric might spark an Internet sensation and appeal to the voters who are want a GOP nominee who is the antithesis of politics as usual.
But will the lesser-known candidates know how to handle foreign policy questions? Can they demonstrate knowledge of economic issues? Send in those questions.

Ron Paul: economy, check; foreign policy, check.

If you send in questions please make them dignified. Remember how Fox tried to marginalize Ron by asking about truther issues and whether he was electible in the last election. Please don't help feed that tendency by asking for conspiratorial feedback on OBL's death or anything. Some of the questions I've seen here made me wonder if I should post this, right now....but Ron's opponents will see it and might well send him snarky questions of exactly the sort we don't want. We need substantive ones.

Most plausible yet T-Paw is polling <1% of course.

But he's the leader of it.

So Dr. Paul is a showman and peformer now? That goes against the previous claims that he doesn't have much of a speaking presence. lol.

They keep wanting this pawlenty hack and so far the public has said, "who?"

Puhhh pawww Please haha... SC ain't gonna like Pawlenty

Ron Paul's going to take the show, then Fox will have to marginalize this debate and call it the warm up 2nd tier debate. Then they will all look like fools when Ron Paul takes the lead in the Republican Presidential Polls, shortly after the debate!

For Businessmen, Trump and Romney are fools, if they're serious about running, they may very well lose their chance for gaining momentum, after this debate! HA!

Yeah. Ron is the only one who is going to be there who polls over 5%, so of course Fox fails to mention that.

I'm not sure it's 'who'? It might be 'the guy who backed cap and trade and universal health care? You are kidding, right?'

But whatever it is, it registers in the polls as.....barely registering in the polls.... despite concerted media effort to pump him up. They are turning to Daniels and Huntsman now. They don't get it that their mold is simply not attractive, whichever hack they spit out of it.

T-Paw polls higher than that, usually 3-5%. Link (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-1452.html)

paul, johnson = far to the right and wildcards? they clearly wrote this without doing any research whatsoever. the media is so one-dimensional int heir understanding of politics. its disgusting how they try to push one candidate who is obviously just a weak , moldable tool. god forbid someone with principle and courage and consistency, honesty or a record of being fucking right be considered a top tier candidate

I'd rather they painted Dr. Paul as far-right rather than the previous smearings as leftist. Esp. in the republican primary.

Fox is going to try to marginalize Paul regardless of what "dignified" issues get emphasized. Sounds more like you are marginalizing truther issues, and want the rest of us to repeat the same strategy that contributed to Ron losing the last time. By being silent on 'we got OBL' and other neocon emotional tactics at a time when the rest of the entire planet is laughing at the absurdity of this week's official story, we cede the rest of the next decade to the warhawks to frame the debate. Running from the issue did not work the last time, so Paul needs to raise it in order to actually get more votes this time.

Keep in mind that Rupert Murdoch was backing Hillary Clinton in 2008, he donated the max to her. The last thing Fox wants to see is a Taft/Goldwater conservative in power.
