Potential 2012 field united over death of bin Laden, divided over Obama credit

By Rachel Rose Hartman

The potential 2012 Republican field reacted overnight to the news of Osama bin Laden's death, uniting in support for having achieved the long sought-after U.S. goal and praising American troops.

As for offering President Obama credit, not all potential contenders took that route. As Holly Bailey writes for The Ticket this morning, it's too soon to determine if the death of bin Laden will help the president in his 2012 re-election campaign.

Below, we wrap up some of the candidates' reactions:

They did say:

Several potential candidates, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels had yet to release public statements at the time of this post.

Paul will just say something like "Killing Osama bin Laden won't make America safer. Only changing our foreign policy can do that."

Anyone who truly understands Ron Pauls philosophy and beliefs already knows what he will have to say.
To sum up what his response will be...

"I'm glad he's gone but it doesn't change anything."

Am I close?

I think Ron Paul is playing it safe by not coming out on this issue until all facts are known. If Ron Paul comes out and says something definitive, it could come back to bite him like it will the rest of the folks who are rejoicing that two un-named administration officials claim OBL is dead.

Hopefully Ron Paul will say "Nice. But if the rest of the government had followed my plan this could have happened years ago."

Good point.

Hopefully Paul emphasizes the fact that he was right on the button in terms of his plan to kill bin Laden. Tactfully, of course, to avoid stirring up controversy - but by no means should he be silent on the virtues of a non-interventionist position.

Has RP released his official statement yet? I read this on Jack Hunter's FB (http://www.facebook.com/southernavenger/posts/223418387672068):

Ron Paul was right: "bin Laden was brought down by intelligence gathering that more resembles excellent police work than a military operation... the enormous military footprint in Afghanistan, next door to bin Laden’s Pakistan refuge, seems especially disproportionate in the wake of his elimination by a small cadre of specialists."

It seems saying that pisses a lot of dumb asses off. They have a need for feeling safe; provided someone else (police or military) fulfills that need. When I tell them to go buy a gun to feel safe, they get even more pissed off.

The 2012 Republican presidential candidates and potential candidates are weighing in on the most significant development in the war on Islamic terrorism in years. Mitt Romney, Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich have commented on the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, offering praise for our magnificent armed forces and intelligence team. Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) have issued statements as well. Mike Huckabee’s comments included the best line of the day: “Welcome to hell.” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) had extended remarks, and his staff put out the video.

The one noticeable exception? Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels (R). I was surprised and e-mailed his staff. I received a one-word answer as to whether he had comment on the killing of Osama bin Laden: “No.”

Given that it is Jennifer Rubin, I strongly doubt she 'forgot.'

The right move IMO is to issue a one-sentence statement that indicates that going after Bin Laden directly was Ron Paul's original policy idea and that, if such a tragedy were to ever happen again, we should use marque and reprisal immediately rather than putting ground troops in the country only causing the non-state attacker to have time to escape to another country where we didn't have military authorization.

He will release a statement similar to this:

"Fellow liberty-lovers, although we are on the brink of the biggest financial crisis our nation has seen in decades, we can all rejoice in the recent death of the world's most ruthless criminal, Osama Bin Laden. It is clear that the U.S.'s interrogation tactics and state-of-the-art intelligence coupled with the distinguished leadership and keen insights of President Obama were crucial to our success in the demise of Osama Bin Laden. I commend our troops for their diligence during this special operation, and I freely confess that I was wrong about our need to be involved in the Middle East. Therefore, I support future campaigns to seek out and neutralize any terrorist threats to the U.S., and I promise to vote for any and all increases in defense spending as we continue to reach our goals of ending terrorism in the world today. God bless the U.S.A."

No, I'm stating that it wouldn't surprise me if the government offed RP and dropped his body in the ocean and claimed that it was UBL. :)

The content of Paul's response also differed from other GOP presidential candidates. He did not credit President Obama or President Bush for the military's ability to carry out the attack.
Amid a debate over how bin Laden's slaying will affect President Obama's chances of reelection, Paul said that it likely won't have an effect on the 2012 campaign

"The American people shift their views rather quickly," he said, citing the fact that President George H.W. Bush's failure to win reelection in 1992 following the Persian Gulf War.
