No, waaaay too early. If this announcement was for political gain, Americans will not remember this when gas is $6/gal in 2012. Strategically, he should have waited until at least Oct. 2012, for maximum effect.

Average voter attention span is, I'd say, three weeks, tops. Unless you have something that is constant like cost-of-living increasing, they won't remember it (maybe with some HEAVY, HEAVY campaigning on the subject, but still . . . ). File this one under "balloon boy", Royal Wedding, and Anna Nicole—hot stories that last for about two weeks.
