View Full Version : Does Ron Paul Stand A Snowball's Chance In Hell?

The key for Rep. Paul will be to use issues to expand his appeal. Principle among these is a call for a rapid wind-down of the three wars (Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya) and a much more pragmatic foreign policy. None of the "major" GOP presidential candidates want to talk about this at all (and they don't). It's something Republican primary voters are dying to hear someone say. If Paul says it, he will gather more support.

Second, he needs to expand his attacks on the Federal Reserve to include "too big to fail" banks and then wrap it all up in a stinging critique of the modern way of American corporatist governance: privatization of gain and socialization of losses. Republican primary voters are dying to hear someone say this. So far, none of the candidates have.

Third, he needs to hammer away at the inevitable collapse of the Blue Social Model (Big Government-Big Business-Big Labor) and point out that the US must build a new model for governance if it is going to avoid bankruptcy. Such a line of attack will enable Paul to attack public employee unions with reckless abandon; again, something Republican primary voters want to hear said over and over again.

Fourth, he needs to reach out to the social conservative base of the party with some kind of initiative that addresses the porn-ification of American culture. This is admittedly a difficult trick for a libertarian to pull off. It seems counter to the entire idea of libertarianism. But, if Paul is to be successful, he will have to lean into the social conservative base. If he's stand-offish all the way, he'll never be the nominee.

We'll see what he does. Four years ago, he had no chance. He's a long shot now. So he's already ahead of the game.

Wait a minute. This Businessweek article makes it sound like Ron Paul can win by....being Ron Paul. I'm missing something here. Is this a psuedo endorsement? It can't be. Things like this never work out for us. Where's the sabotage...someone help me find the sabotage.....

Seriously, great article! Points 1-3 are already done. (In fact if republicans are really ready to hear about ending the wars, the nomination is as good as ours.) Point 4? Well Ron can point out how he's been faithful to his wife and their won't be any Clintonesque "cigar jokes" with him as president. That and the abortion issue can help him. He needs to point out the libertarian way out of the "gay marriage" issue that has so many social conservatives are concerned about. The easiest way to do that is to rely on a states rights argument.

Anyone remember the youtube rant from a random guy about not having a snowball's chance in hell for Ron Paul from 07 primary?

But I would maintain that Dr. Paul's chances have improved very considerably since that day last May when "El Rushbo" declared him not to have a snowball's chance. Of the eleven "big name" Republicans who started the race, only four are left. Giuliani has turned tail after doing so poorly in Florida. Thompson is gone, and was probably never really all that interested. Huckabee is beginning to feel the "cold shoulder" and both he and McCain are strapped for cash. Neither they nor Romney can assert any real "conservative" bona-fides.

Ron Paul, on the other hand, is just getting started. He has a ton of money in the bank, and there's more where that came from. He has the most powerful weapon in this race - a twenty year track record of political integrity energized by the only platform truly based on the Constitution. And according to the Associated Press, he is on the verge of winning the caucuses in snowy Maine. And so, for what it's worth, here's how I see things:

Ron can win if he is the VP candidate in a coalition of independents, honest liberals & libertarians.

Not sure who should be Pres, though..

This bankrupt banksta banana republic empire is hell, and the RP revolution is the snowball rolling down the hill.

5. And he could actually win (http://theweek.com/article/index/214641/why-is-ron-paul-running-again-5-theories?sms_ss=twitter&at_xt=4db96cdd1d89bb27,0)
The conventional wisdom is that Paul stands no legitimate chance, says Drew Ivers, a member of the state central committee of Iowa's Republican Party and a Paul supporter, as quoted by The New York Times. But 2012 could be different. Paul is "in the epicenter of the three or four or five the most critical and controversial issues in our nation today," including government spending, the war, and the financial crisis. "That's how snowballs develop, you know. They start small, and they get bigger as they roll downhill."

Huckabee might not be running, so according to last poll I saw if Mike and one other, forget who, don't run Ron would get 16%, which is a GREAT base to start with!
