I don't think using terms like "the blacks" is that bad although maybe not pc, but grouping every black person together is pretty collectivist.

I think its just his east coast mannerisms. A lot of the upper class people in New York in LA (I ought to know, I lived with the LA upper class all my life) talk that way. Instead of saying, "I like gays" or "I like blacks" they will say "I like the gays" or "I like the blacks". Though I have also heard these people say some very non-flattering things about people with darker skin pigment. So for all the equality and tolerance garbage they spew in the public form, many fo them don't truly think it in their heart of hearts or practice it in real life.
