Buyers could face a year in jail or a $,1000 fine under a proposed bill by a city councilwoman fed up with cheapskate tourists and Big Apple residents flooding her district in search of fake designer merchandise.

"We don't want to be known as the place to come to get counterfeit goods," said Councilwoman Margaret Chin, whose Chinatown district is ground zero for counterfeiters.

Under Chin's bill, which is being introduced Thursday, shoppers caught buying any counterfeit product could be jailed or slapped with a fine of $1,000 -- a little less than the price of Marc Jacobs' frequently copied Baroque Quilting Mini Stam bag, which retails for $1,250.

LOL funny stuff they cracked down on these shops so now people selling this stuff went even more guerrilla on them. They hide merchandise under the steel walking plates and approach people on the street asking if they want anything and then pick up the plates and show them what they got.

I guess this is NYC way of upping their game.

I guess it's about killing jobs, jobs, jobs on one side, and giving jobs, jobs, jobs(cops, jails, etc.) on the other side.

Unless the vendor tells the buyer that it's a knock off, how can the prosecution enforce this idiotic law?

This lady probably is just upset that people are all getting the same handbags as her's (at least identical) and at a fraction of the cost. She wants to remain the elite that she is in her eyes.

If you can get a Rolex for $50, there's a pretty good chance it's a knock off. However, who the fuck cares? Producing a product at a fraction of the price to compete with an established company is called capitalism. And what do we call someone who opposes capitalism...?
