A Rhode Island state lawmaker who once criticized the state Legislature by invoking the image of pot-smoking immigrants denies a DUI charge he received after being arrested for alleged marijuana possession, The Providence Journal reports.

House Minority Leader Robert Watson was arrested Friday at a police checkpoint in East Haven, Conn.

The Journal says the police report alleged that the Republican lawmaker's eyes were "extremely glassy and bloodshot" and that he smelled of alcoholic beverages as well as the "distinct odor of marijuana."

My guess is after he invoked the images of the pot-smoking immigrants it hit the media and he had a friend or a few friends point out to him how harmless and enjoyable cannabis can be. Watson, being an alcohol tried it and decided he liked it, but insisted on drinking along with smoking before driving.

If only Republican lawmakers would quit gutlessly pandering to their most irrational and reactionary constituents, admit that cannabis isn't such a big deal, and actively attempt to reeducate a population that has been denied the truth about the plant for eighty years, maybe the collective brainwashing would start to wear off.

Probably supported those checkpoints as well.

Good.
