but in clockwork orange, they were trying to make Alex, et al into psychos by exposing them to constant "ultra violence" (IIRC). Here they're just measuring reactions to stimulus. Still creepy, though.

No no, watch or read it again, HB.

The government was trying to "cure" Alex through the "Ludovico Technique" in which they drugged him and then exposed him to scenes of "ultra violence".

The drugs made him violently nauseous whenever he was exposed to violence, sexual arousal or, as an unwanted side effect, the "lovely Ludwig Van", which the government claimed had "cured" him.
