Liberty Action Agenda for MAY 2011 - Pending Legislation for Congress

Support H.R. 1146, The American Sovereignty Restoration Act. This proposal terminates the United States' participation in the United Nations. (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h1146/show)

The United States is currently engaged in another unconstitutional and undeclared war in the Middle East. President Barack Obama explicitly cited a United Nations resolution as his source of authority to wage war in Libya. This acquiescence to the United Nations is and has been for many decades the excuse the U.S. government uses when it wishes to involve itself in regime changes or changes in the form of government in many countries around the world.

H.R. 1146 would terminate all U.S. participation in the UN, repeal the UN Headquarters Agreement (which would leave the UN no offices along the East River in New York), stop all appropriations of U.S. taxpayer dollars for the organization, and most importantly, end the United States’ participation in any agreements or conventions with any UN organ, body, or agency or commission. H.R. 1146 is the best vehicle to Get US out! of the United Nations.

Oppose Patriot Act Extensions. (http://www.votervoice.net/core.aspx?AID=972&Screen=alert&IssueId=24744&APP=GAC)

Currently there are nine different bills introduced in Congress, three in the House and six in the Senate, that would extend the provisions of the Patriot Act for one to three years. Four of the Senate bills are already out of committee and scheduled for a vote on the General Calendar.

All of the measures would extend the most wretched parts of the Patriot Act: the “lone wolf” provision that permits indiscriminate government surveillance of individuals for no reason; the “library records” provision; and the “John Doe roving wiretap” provision that ignores the Fourth Amendment’s guarantee of probable cause and proper court order.

Because so many of the popular Tea Party candidates that were elected last fall failed to understand the principles of the Fourth Amendment and the violations of it caused by the Patriot Act, they voted to extend it in early 2011 for the fourth time. Much work needs to be carried out immediately by real patriots to educate the newly-elected on the Patriot Act and its gutting of the Fourth Amendment. (For more information about the Patriot Act, see “Anti-Fourth Amendment Patriot Act (http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/congress/6988-anti-fourth-amendment-patriot-act)” in the April 18 issue of The New American.)

Oppose Raising the Debt Ceiling. (http://www.votervoice.net/core.aspx?AID=972&Screen=alert&IssueId=24332&APP=GAC)

It’s predicted that the debt ceiling will be hit by May 16. There are only two choices to remedy the legal problem — raise the debt limit or slash spending. Because of the gridlock among the factions — White House, and congressional Democrats and Republicans — there isn’t much hope that the debt ceiling won’t be raised. But, it’s important to let your legislators know that deficit spending must stop and deep cuts must be made as a responsible method for reducing the federal deficit and national debt.

Stop Government Takeover of the Internet. (http://www.votervoice.net/core.aspx?AID=972&Screen=alert&IssueId=24458&APP=GAC)

Support S.J. Res. 6 (http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d112:sj6:), a resolution of disapproval that would reverse the FCC’s “net neutrality” regulations; and support H.J. Res. 37 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=hj112-37), companion bill already passed in the House.

Last December, the FCC issued its “net neutrality” regulations for the Internet. However, don’t be deceived by the misleading terminology; the FCC actually intends to enable a government takeover of the Internet under the pretense of guaranteeing “net neutrality” for Internet Service Providers and users. The FCC’s new rules established itself as sole arbiter of how Internet Service Providers carry on business, claimed presidential “kill switch” authority in emergencies, and would control all URL links between the United States and the rest of the world, among other uncompetitive regulations.

Because the Internet has become such an incredible force for alternative information and instant communication, it needs to be kept free of government interference and control. The Senate’s makeup is not conducive for an easy passage, so overwhelming pressure and education needs to be directed toward one’s Senators immediately.

Also the Patriot Act will be back up, I believe. They extended it for 90 days, and Rand was promised a week of debate on it. Mitch is going to try to make it permanent.
