Atlas Shrugged - Book Review (http://thenewamerican.com/reviews/books/7143-atlas-shrugged-the-book)

Some of us remember our first reading of Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged like our first time behind the wheel of a car: intoxicating but inexplicably discomforting in spots.

Atlas Shrugged - Movie Review (http://www.thenewamerican.com/reviews/movies/7139-atlas-shrugged-the-movie)

The movie Atlas Shrugged: Part I, set in the year 2016 and adapted from Ayn Rand’s famous novel published in 1957, accomplishes much of what the author intended in her book: a beautiful, poignant, painful expression of the conflict between egalitarianism and the right to own private property.

What a bogus movie review. As if the right to own private property is just naturally in conflict with egalitarianism? That sounds like it was written by a statist/socialist to me.

Good to see the book is alive and well though.

The author is Constitutionalist / anti-Socialist.

Socialists/Communists want to abolish private property. Did you know that?

My point is that egalitarianism, as conventionally defined, is not naturally in conflict with property rights.

From Wikipedia:
Egalitarianism (from French égal, meaning "equal") is a belief of thought that favors equality of some sort. Its general premise is that people should be treated as equals on certain dimensions such as race, religion, ethnicity, political affiliation, economic status, social status, and cultural heritage. Egalitarian doctrines maintain that all humans are equal in fundamental worth or social status.

Owning private property is not in conflict with treating people as equals, or giving them equal rights.

Many of us believe a society based on property rights would be much MORE egalitarian than our current system.

As long as Rich and Poor people exist, egalitarianism will not exist.

Egalitarianism: The Holy Grail of Socialism (http://www.strike-the-root.com/content/egalitarianism-holy-grail-socialism)

Socialists seek to make everyone equal. In reality, no one is equal. (Rich v. Poor, Smart v. Dumb, Pretty v. Ugly, Healthy v. Sick)

My problem with the description of Atlas Shrugged as a "conflict between egalitarianism and property rights" is that, to the average reader, it portrays the antagonists in the movie as do-gooder egalitarians who just want equality.

A better description would be "conflict between government intervention and property rights"

Just because egalitarianism is the goal of socialists doesn't mean it can't be the goal of capitalists as well, just through different means.

The looters, as Ayn Rand calls them, is using egalitarianism as the reason to promote government intervention to make everyone equal.

Read the book or watch the movie. You will understand better.

maybe this thread will push some on this site to at least link over to amazon and buy this book. I would recommend hardback or kindle seeing how its so big the paper back would be a pain in the ass to read.

I remember when i was 1st told to read this book. I spent most of my reading time on books from misses.org to try and get ejumacated. i didn't have time for a massive fiction. The book should really be classified as philosophy.

I stand by my earlier posts. The conflict comes from the antagonists use of government intervention to achieve their means. If all they did was attempt to cajole, persuade or peacefully protest the capitalists, then it would be a different book.

Why did the "looters" use government intervention?

Answer: To promote Egalitarianism.

Read the book. I think you have a misunderstanding of what Rand is talking about.

Movie producer seems like pretty hypocritical neocon war monger, therefore going to pass on the movie.

Altas Shrugged movie funder also funded war campaigns (http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?287995-Man-funding-movie-quot-Atllas-Shrugged-quot-also-funded-Funding-The-Movement-To-Save-The-War&p=3211798&viewfull=1#post3211798)

But did she her self like cats or was a collectivist hypocrite and foreign welfare advocate?

yep. I read some where that once Ayn Rand did something that contradicted her philosophy. There for the only logical conclusion to come to is that the entire philosophy must be scraped and all of her books burned till no memory is left of her of Man or Mason, forever.
