I agree completely.

Too many people look upon gov't assistance as an entitlement - rather than a helping hand when in need. Especially since it's mostly in the form of regular monthly checks - which can easily lead to addictive type dependence.

And unfortunately, I don't see that changing. Charity (by and large) has been effectively squeezed out of existence by the gov't. I know a lot of people (including me) who are hesitant to donate much to charity since the gov't already is there for people. Plus, with taxes collected to pay for that gov't help - there is invariably less money for charity.

And then gov't uses that convenient fact that charities don't have enough funds to help all the needy as a reason to further its "giving" - which further cements its monopoly on assistance - ensuring people have nowhere to turn except to gov't for help.

You are right. And the horrible thing about government welfare is that it takes the human element of us caring for one another out of the equation.

When liberals or socialists attack libertarians for not being "humanitarian" or "not wanting to help our brother", I always point out that government welfare completely severs our natural inclination to help each other.

Communists/leftists/progressives or whatever you want to call them consider government to be their god. Communists have traditionally been atheists, in large part due to Karl Marx's statement that religion is the opiate of the masses.
Just about anything should come from Almighty Government according to the leftists. In communist societies like Mao's China, government controlled everything, people ate in communal kitchens, people wore the same grey Mao suits.
This is our big challenge, dealing with the lefties who worship government. They think we want to destroy or commit sacrilege against their god.

Also let me point out that Government can become corrupt and take away your Welfare at anytime they want Charity is better.

Actually, I've always seen it the other way around. Private charities often put a lot of very logical conditions on you getting your money. Some of them require you to do some work for the charity. Some require you to attend their vocational training or to take other classes to help you transition back into having a job and being productive. Some put a time limit on how long you can be at a certain tier within their program. Some will only pay turn-off notices and evictions, rather than just paying your bills and your rent.

There are still other places where you can still get a small sum of money in-hand with very few questions asked (mostly churches), or a voucher for gasoline or a bus pass so you can get to and from work.

Government sees you as the sum of your stated numbers, and nothing else. The "help" they offer is to help you live off of them. How much of it is actually geared towards cleaning people up and getting them back on their own two feet?

I still donate to charities that have helped me in the past. There was a time when I had to go from charity to charity looking for some very slight temporary assistance. When you are a married woman with no children, no one actually wants to help unless you claim to be battered... and even then it's a struggle. Churches were the best. They had those random brown bags full of donated food (generally terrible stuff, but it's way better than nothing, or fighting for food at the local pantry). They gave me vouchers for gas. They gave me over $100 towards my rent. Every Christmas I send them a tithing, above and beyond what I was given, to each of those churches. The notes I get back are heartwarming. I don't think I've ever gotten a gushing "thank you" note from the Government for the taxes they confiscate for their social programs.
