View Full Version : White House unveils national strategy for secure internet IDs

As expected, that will be entirely voluntary and largely driven by various private sector companies, who will be responsible for verifying your ID and providing you with secure credentials that you'll be able to use across the internet -- the credentials themselves could simply be a secure application, or something like smart card or SecurID token. The administration is also quick to point out that the system is not a national ID program of any sort, and it's going to some length to play up the involvement of multiple credential providers, with Commerce Secretary Gary Locke saying that "having a single issuer of identities creates unacceptable privacy and civil liberties issues."

Ok, so let's say I live in a house with 6 other people and we're all connected to a router. Do all 6 of us have to login separately to this system?

Does anyone want to know what this is really about?

Online National Sales Tax. Eventually, some form of Sales Tax will be implemented, probably piggy backed on some other completely unrelated bill. When it is, Big Brother will be able to abuse your Internet ID to Track you and come back and say that you owe X ammt of money. It is nothing more than a way for them to stick their hands in your wallets. And for those of you that are not concerned about your Privacy, think of it this way. Total Control starts with Total Information.

The controllers will treat the internet just like the public highways. Licenses, speed controls and traffic stop checks.

really.. how the heck is one password "safer" than multiple passwords?.. SERIOUSLY...

only thing i can think is if they get linked bio-metrically..

pft.. i know their game.. like the ssn and state id's right? not "necessary" but before you know it, every major internet institution will require the damn thing... NO THANKS.

There are a lot of geeks out there that will find a way around this.

Since it's voluntary I think a lot of people are going to find a way around this =P

Any bets on how long after this is implemented before this is compromised.
The free market can react quickly to security vulnerabilities.
With this monstrosity, if Anything gets hosed, it will take them years to react.
Imagine if (802.11) wireless security were in the hands of government when W.E.P. was found to
be full of holes. They would be still trying to fix it today.
The free market reacted much better.
Work arounds sprung up almost immediately and interim standards right after.
Now wireless can be made quite secure with the proper configuration and management of current equipment.
