If you're canadian, and you want to watch a bunch of people who don't understand basic economics talk about the Canadian economy, be sure to tune into the Canadian Election Debate tonight.

I sure wish we had an Austrian like Ron Paul in there to ask the tough questions, and make this shit a worthwhile tv event!

My brother in law is from St. John's Island. We have had a few interesting discussions about economics.:) The dude is smart too! He has 3 Masters degrees....THREE. But his understanding of how the world works is so utterly skewed.

Yeah, 4th since 2004.

I just sent in my voting registration papers. Don't know who i'll vote for yet though...probably will end up voting Conservative though, as in my riding there's nothing better and Liberals usually win anyway. Not voting NDP or Green.

One thing I would like to see at the state level in the United States is the adoption of a Westminster system of government. It can be chaotic at times, but I like that elections can be called whenever the government loses support.

Im not gonna bother voting. If there was an Austrian dropping some hard economic truth like Ron Paul does, I **might** consider it, but other than that... This song from South park pretty much sums up my views on the process...

Let's get out and vote, Let's make our voices heard. We've been given the right to choose between a douche and a turd. It's democracy in action, put your freedom to the test. A big fat douche or a stupid turd, which do you like best.

In Canada you have to pick from a wide variety of wonderfully contrasting parties: The Progressive Socialist Party, The Liberal Socialist Party, and out right communist parties wearing green, orange or french swear words (New democrats, Green Party, Bloc).

We got's a third, fourth and fifth party, and it doesn't help a thing. In fact the New Democrats were born on a rewrittn communist manefesto drenched in maple syrup.

The Bloc Quebecois want independence from Canada but seem to keep trying to take over Ottawa to make it happen.

The Canadian iron curtain: If it ain't a government program, then we don't friggn want it.

Wow. Besides being smart, he probably has a lot of tolerance for being in such a structured and repressive environment.

Speaking of hockey, the French debate was rescheduled so it would not coincide with the Stanley Cup playoffs. :D

Ugh. More elections.

Three socialist parties and a fascist party. Huzzah. Libertarianism used to be strong in Canada, then the Conservative parties merged and Harper took over. Now the Libertarians here are basically in stasis because they figure (at the moment, correctly) that we are a lost cause, like France or Japan. Also, Marc Emery was thrown in jail and deported to the US because Harper is a puppet of Neocons. You just can't win.

Probably going to back the liberals, since they are willing to "compromise" on anything, and in Canada that means they will slow down the process of government growth through incompetence. Ideally we will get a liberal minority government that can't change anything, followed by a truly libertarian Conservative coming out and winning (libertarians were the driving force of conservative strength in the 80s and 90s, especially in the Reform party on the west coast). Snowball's chance in hell, but I can always hope I don't have to run for New Hampshire.

Oh, and there IS a Libertarian party. They sit on their asses, twiddle their thumbs, and do nothing. Seriously, there is war in Afghanistan/Iraq and they get the chance to gain massive future publicity and strength in the future by publicly denouncing both. What do they do? Sit around and argue. The big bailouts (Canada style) are coming from the so-called "Conservatives. Great chance to get their names out, right? Nope, they act like they are just there for show and say nothing (a libertarian who doesn't oppose the bailouts is no libertarian IMO). It isn't even like it is in the US where parties are entrenched, either. The Libertarians used to be pretty sizable, its just that their refusal to get shit done has pushed Libertarians to the Conservative party (Where they get belittled by Harper). Had they actually bothered to take a couple vocal stands on issues, they could be stronger than the Greens right now, but they didn't and thus are another nobody party, like the Marxist-Leninists. A Ron Paul party (run by Ron Paulites or what have you, assuming we all lived in Canada) could probably displace the NDP because of taking a stand (Ron Paul could REALLY make those crooks in parliament squirm). If the AMERICAN Libertarian party was over here, they could be the opposition or even the government, but instead we get the do-nothings.

lol, these guys are such clowns. They're just trying to find ways to attack eachother. No one is talking about anything real. What a joke.

The only thing they seem to agree on is that they all "love democracy".

Well...Harper was an Austrian....that was until he became PM

i hate to say it but Harper is the lesser evil among everyone here.

The only hope is that he does have a "hidden (libertarian) agenda" and he would unleash it when he has a majority.

Pray for gridlock, its the only thing that one can hope for in a country that wrote socialism into their constitution. They might as well put it in lay terms, 'you're free, but we will have a Minister and department for everything.'

The Department of The Study of Bureaucratic Growth is not yet formed yet - But I heard they formed a commission to study its feasibility.

Harper is as much a Libertarian as Bush. He may have had some libertarian positions in the past, before he came anywhere near power, but those are as meaningful now as Bush's 2000 position of a non-interventionist foreign policy. And while i still see him as a somewhat lesser evil as far as the economy is concerned (not hard considering he's running against straight up socialists), never in Canada's history has someone so brazenly power hungry been prominent. If given a majority I'm seriously concerned about him trying to establish himself dictator for life or something.

I don't think anyone really did, but it doesn't matter anyway because anyone who will be voting for him wasn't watching. Bloc Quebecois voters will be watching them all duke it out in French tonight instead.
