John DiStaso's Granite Status: Santorum first Republican to commit to NH presidential debate

MONDAY UPDATE: SANTORUM TO DEBATE. Even though he is not yet an official candidate, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum on Monday became the first Republican to announce he will participate in New Hampshire's first scheduled presidential debate.

A source close to the debate said three other major likely candidates have told organizers that they will be there.

Santorum's office released a statement saying that he will participate the debate scheduled for June 7 sponsored by WMUR-TV, the New Hampshire Union Leader and CNN.

Santorum's office said the announcement comes after a Santorum victory in a South Carolina straw poll during the weekend. It said that earlier this month, Senator Santorum was the first potential 2012 presidential candidate to commit to participating in the first presidential debate in South Carolina on May 5.

In a statement, Santorum said, "I am committed to being an active participant in the debate process to share my views about how we can best tackle our nation's challenges, particularly in a state like New Hampshire that hosts the first-in-the-nation primary. I hope others considering a run for president will take this opportunity seriously so that we may offer solutions and alternatives to President Obama's failed policies."

Santorum official stance is that he "continues to seriously consider a run for President."

He is scheduled to return to the state later this week for his 14th visit, more than any other potential candidate so far during the 2012 first-in-the-nation primary cycle.

Does he actually think he has a shot? Does he place top 3 in any poll?

TUESDAY UPDATE: "TPAW" TO DEBATE. Likely presidential hopeful Tim Pawlenty has told organizers of the first New Hampshire Republican presidential debate that he will participate.

The debate, scheduled for June 7, is being sponsored by WMUR-TV, the New Hampshire Union Leader and CNN.

Pawlenty, a former Minnesota governor, announced the formation of an exploratory committee last month.

Rich Killion, a spokesman for the Pawlenty committee, said, "Governor Pawlenty is looking forward to speaking with Nashua Republicans on Thursday and at the Tax Day Tea Party rally at the State House on Friday. You'll see the governor often in New Hampshire, in particular, as a participant in the CNN/WMUR/Union Leader debate on June 7."

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum on Monday announced that he will participate in the debate.

A source said that other likely presidential candidates have also told organizers they will participate, but they have not made announcements.

Earlier updates and the full April 7 Granite Status follow.
