Below is the letter I wrote to Congress this morning using DownsizeDC.org 's campaign that opposes raising the debt ceiling unless a balanced budget amendment is passed at the same time.
You may copy or borrow from what I wrote, if you want . . .
To explain why I don't want the debt ceiling raised, and why I do want a balanced budget, let me call your attention to a great column by Terrence P. Jeffrey at CNSNews. http://cnsnews.com/news/article/going-broke-treasury-has-only-586b-cash
Here's a paraphrase of the most important section . . .
* Imagine that you had an average monthly income of about $170 and expenses of about $940, and that you were more than $14,000 in debt.
* Imagine also that you have only $58.60 left in your bank account and $130.50 left on your line of credit.
* Now multiply those numbers by 1 billion and you will have the Federal State's up-to-date financial situation.
I think that says it all. You're broke. Stop spending. Don't raise the debt ceiling. Balance the budget immediately, and pass a balanced budget amendment.
END LETTER
