The Crusades; A story of three kings

By Uncle Emanuel Watkins

The Turkish people like to boast about how they have never lost a major war. Yet, in reflecting on their history, they once suffered more than just a defeat as they were once pushed to the side. Indeed, in their zeal to reach the Holy land of Israel, Frederick I along with his mighty fighting force had to fight their way through just so the Germans might get the opportunity to face an occupying force led by the Arab leader Saladin and other Muslim leaders.

Unfortunately, as he was swimming in the Saleph River in Turkey, Frederick’s armor filled up full of water as he had forgotten to remove it causing him to be swept away and drowned. As the remaining force of Germans were left leaderless and in a strange land, they fell under siege to the Turks and most of their army eventually riddled and destroyed.

This event is significant as the crusade to fight the Holy War was voluntary. The number of the fighting force deciding to pilgrimage and fight in this war was great only because Barbarossa himself as their Emperor and King was leading it.

Meanwhile, making a wise decision, Saladin chose not to cleanse the city of Jerusalem with Christian blood, but with the essence of flowers instead. In my opinion, the Germans had already saved the Holy land by their defeat as the brashness and gall of Barbarossa had left Saladin deeply impressed.

Bothering Saladin during this time also, King Richard (the Lion Heart) of Britain and King Philip Augustus of France were also traveling by other routes leading other forces of Christian volunteers to meet up with Barbarossa making their way towards the mission to reconquer the Holy land. Eventually, as King Philip Augustus had to leave to take care of business back at home, King Richard the Lionheart was left to lead the forces against Saladin.

As neither side ever won the war and as King Richard realized how Israel would never be free of the Muslim culture surrounding it, a treaty was finally reached agreeing on the present situation culminating today.

Whether one makes the decision or not to serve in the military under a necessary tyrant (president) with him having been elected to serve as the Commander and Chief over, at best, what is meant to be only a more perfect government, regardless, we are all born into God’s militia to serve Him as more menial servants to guard His New Covenant protecting and loving our neighbors as we would ourselves.

Stand in faith in darkness. Walk in faith towards darkness. March in faith into darkness.

*Known as Barbarossa (red beard) and exalted as the German Holy Roman emperor, and also as the King of Germany, along with him being the King of Italy, as well as, finally, the King of Burgandy
