a shutdown of the federal government would threaten the nation’s fragile economic recovery.
...
nearly 800,000 federal workers would probably be told to stop working
...
Small business loans would stop. Tax returns filed on paper would not be processed. Government Web sites would go dark. And federal loan guarantees for new mortgages would become unavailable.
...
the cumulative impact of the shutdown “would have a significant impact on our economic momentum.”
(You mean hitting the breaks on the slow motion train wreck?)
...

I'm really trying to find a downside with this. Can anybody?

ps: most web sites keep ticking just fine for months and years without someone babysitting them. The only reason one would go dark is if someone deliberately shut it off.

Shut down the white house, then we won't hear the whining.

I really like the bit about tax returns, think they'll give an extension, since they can't process them, anyhow?

I found it interesting in the President's speech this afternoon when he said that anybody planning a trip to yellowstone this weekend will have to try and get their money back from the resorts they booked... and that will hurt the middle class.

Mr. President,

Your disconnect from society is evident in that you think the middle class can a) afford to go on vacation, and b) afford a resort when on that vacation. Go back to the golf courses sir, and let us figure this sh*t out for you.

Thank you.

Eight hundred thousand jobs and nine hundred thousand propaganda sources vs. a chance for millions of small businesses to avoid strangulation. Hmmm...

Note to troops: Put all remaining fuel in your transports and come home! Thank you very much.

This is like what Rand says about the first thing the govt does to convince you you need to give them more money, is shut off the lights at little league. NOt go for the corporate subsidies, etc., of course.

Is this a government shutdown they're talking about or Y2K?

Obama apparently said social security checks would not go out. That didn't happen last time, but this is entirely up to him. How bad he wants to make things. How much hurt he wants to impose on the public.

What a crock!

The Postal Service won't shut down. Expect a delay getting any refund you might have coming.

Maybe it'll take a minute for the check to clear. Could you be so lucky?

What is the difference between the federal government and Al Qaeda in this case? Both terrorists.

A viral e-mail stating that if the gvmt is closed on April 15th, there is no need to file and you owe no taxes this year would be great!

I bet a bunch of ppl would believe it.

Only if it is a long shutdown will it have any impact on the economy.
