View Full Version : I cannot tell you how many calls I have had in the last 24 hours......

I have had so many calls, e-mails and IM's in the last 24 hours that it is hard to keep up with and every single one is from people who know I am very politically involved yet have not listened to one word I have said nor heeded a single warning. Every single one of them has been asking about a government shut down and what it will do to them. I have heard:

"Will I lose my social security?"

"What about my disability benefits?"

"What about my VA benefits?"

"We get a check for my Son being autistic what about that?"

"My kid is in the Army, will he lose his pay?"

"Are we still getting mail?"

"Are we going to get attacked by terrorists with no military and police around?" (I literally facepalmed over this one)

"Don't they realize that people need this stuff?" (By "they" this person meant Republicans)

"Am I going to lose my welfare?"

"Am I going to lose my food stamps?"

"I got a FAFSA grant so does this mean I cannot go to class?"

"Does this mean I do not have to go to school?" (public school student)

"Does this mean I do not have to go to school?" (public school teacher)

All of these calls, e-mails and IM's have been some variation of these questions. Of course they all get a lecture along with their answer but I can tell none of them are listening to any of that and only care about what handouts they are going to miss out on. That is what seems to make them angry. As long as the government checks and benefits keep rolling in they will just watch Dancing With The Stars and bury their head in the sand.

I live in a marine town. The officers here are really spreading the fearmongering here and I'm having dozens of soldiers tell me that they aren't going to be paid April 15th and that they are really angry.

There is a newspaper, The Marine Times, and the front cover is "YOU ARE NOT GOING TO GET PAID"

On the bright side, at least they had enough respect for you to call you and ask your advice.

The flip side is to ask people "What are you going to do when interest on the national debt becomes more than the taxes that are being brought in causing a government shut down regardless"? Oh yeah, and LOL @ whoever thought without the federal government there would be no local police.

I would like to think it is respect but I think it is more about the fact that I literally never shut up about this stuff. So I guess they just figured if any of their friends or relatives knew it would be me.

I remember the last shutdown. Well had planned for months to climb the tetons. Once the government shutdown well were told the park was closed, were would not be allowed to go.

We still went. Rangers still on duty blocking the road advised we would be trespassing if we continued. There were not be search or rescue available.

We parked elsewhere, hiked in a extra day and had the best week ever. Not other tourists, nobody around.

I hope and pray it gets shut down.

Dependence is a wonderful thing if you're a tyrant. Hopefully, I'll be dead when the bill finally comes due. ;) I don't feel like killing zombies to be honest with you.

I wish the Federal Government shut down forever.

But I don't see what is so bad about this, at least they won't be borrowing any money on the credit of the taxpayers.

Congress is irrelevant anyway... the central planners will just go on printing money and bombing countries..

I'm not even sure what they're going to shut down. They have plainly stated that the money will keep flowing.

"Does this mean that I don't have to send money to the IRS?"

You dont have to all ready. Accordingly, "there is no law" that requires a person (however they want to define "person") to pay Income Tax. However, like not giving the bully your lunch money, if you dont, you already have a good expectation of what will happen.

Darn it! I want my stolen FRN's back from the IRS!

They're not worth much anymore, anyhow...

It is appalling how many people are worried about a government shutdown...gee wiz - a whole day that they won't be legislating freedoms away and spending money we don't have....how dare they?

The FED is supposed to stay open.

Since it's supposedly "independent" from the government - it would, I was just making a little joke.

Actually, Congress will be in session focusing on spending money they don't have.

I would benefit tremendously from a federal shutdown. My biggist competitor is USDA APHIS Wildlife Services.

So... if there is a shutdown, will I have to go to school? :D
e: Just to contribute something worthy to the thread, though, will this actually help anything at all? It's not like the sacred cows of Social Security and national offense are going to be touched.
