This article motivated me, after a long time, to try to do something about this... today.

I just setup a new domain and blog. The blog will accept news articles such as these and promote this issue.

NEEDED: Someone to do a header for a wordpress blog and choose a ready made theme that will work with the site. If you are graphically inclined, care about this issue, and can do a header for this project please post here.

The site is: http://www.DOGHOMICIDE.COM

I am not looking to be touchy feely and skirt around the topic. The header should be graphic and should show our storm troopers in full action.

"Dedicated To The Brave Men and Women of Law Enforcement"

The blog was just put online a few minutes ago and I am working on collecting as many articles as I can and hope to have as many online as possible in the next 24 hours.

The officer was there to serve a child support warrant for my step-son who did not live with us. Alledgely the officer went to our front door and side door and then went to the back of the house where Max was on his leash, approached Max by the door, alledgely was snipped at, and then his fired 7 shots into our dog. The ambulance on the scene reported his pants weren't even torn and he didn't even need a band aide. To make a horrible situation even worse, the police told us they had to take our dog and removed his head to test for rabies, even though we presented complete documentation that all his shots were up to date. Our local news station in Washington DC on channel 7 & 9 came to our house to do an inteview and take video the bloody sidwalk where Max's teeth, jaw and blood lay.

BTW, It is not only dogs that are killed by police. There have been incidents of police shooting more exotic pets as well (snakes, lizards, etc)

David, you are most welcome! Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region in general seem to have a disproportionately high number of animal deaths by cops. I will post stories as I find them for you and if you would like some that go beyond dogs than I can try to find some of those as well. I remember a story from a couple of years ago where a cop shot an emu on a local farm and like I said previously, a lot of reptile owners and other exotic pet owners have found that police will shoot at those pets as well in some circumstances.

Also, I think the idea for the site is fantastic and would encourage you to add in some liberty movement information as well. Some people base their entire lives around their pets and they may be able to remain apathetic about everything else but you will get their attention when talking about this issue. One last suggestion I would have is to maybe add a state menu where people can click on their state to find stories from their own back yard so to speak. I am leaving you some +rep for having the initiative to start this up. Kudos to you!

well I am not sure if this counts or not because it was not a pet but apparently a cop got a call about a snake in a tree and decided to shoot at it and ended up killing a five year old boy who was fishing with his Grandfather!

Oh look, see how clever this writer is: the owner was "muzzled" and "put in the pound" after getting too angry at the benevolent protectors that just shot and killed his dog.

Pet Owner Muzzled After Cop Shoots His Dog

11 March 2011

http://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/Man-Gets-Mad-Arrested-After-Cop-Shoots-His-Dog-117829268.html

By Todd Wright

A Broward dog owner was put in the pound after he allegedly got too angry that a police officer shot his pet.

Rony St. Gerard, 25, was arrested and charged with encouraging a riot after he watched a Lauderhill police officers shoot his pit bull, who was fighting with another dog, the Sun-Sentinel reported.

"Y'all shot the dog in front of my house!" St. Gerard screamed at police. "In front of my kids, man!"

Cops alleged the angry dog owner went on for about two hours, despite being warned he needed to calm down.

The officers were actually in Gerard's neighborhood on an unrelated matter when they saw the pit bull in a fight with a Shih Tzu. When the dog looked as if it was about to charge, cops opened fire on Gerard's pooch.

Others were angry the dog was shot right in front of the neighborhood children, but Gerard was the one who ended up muzzled in the end.

He was released from jail on $10,000 bond Friday.

Police: Boston Terrier-Pit Bull Mix Charged At Officer

POSTED: Wednesday, March 30, 2011

http://www.news4jax.com/news/27374834/detail.html

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Blood stains trail the drive where a 30-pound Boston terrier-pit bull mix named Bolt was shot and killed by police.

"I want him back," 11-year-old Atlanta Perry said. "I miss my dog. I got him for my birthday because my mom knew that's the only thing I really wanted. We named him Bolt because he looked like the dog off the video game, and they shot him."

A Jacksonville police officer shot the dog in a parking lot about 9 a.m. Tuesday after police said they had received several complaints for days.

"My daughter sitting there on the concrete and couldn't even breathe, screaming for her Bolt," said Joanne Perry, Atlanta's mother. "She didn't even go to bed last night."

Dog killed by police during house call on Saturday

April 4, 2011 4:00 pm by Tracey Taylor
http://www.berkeleyside.com/2011/04/04/dog-shot-and-killed-by-police-during-house-call-on-saturday/

On the afternoon of Saturday April 2, police shot and killed a dog at a home on Shattuck Avenue where a number of men had been shooting targets with pellet guns in their backyard.

According to a Berkeley Police Department statement, the police received a call at about 3:30 p.m. from a resident in the 3200 block of Shattuck who reported that a man was firing a handgun in the rear yard of a nearby residence.

“BPD Officers responded immediately and met with the witness/caller who pointed out the home to the officers,” the release stated. ”Officers contacted the occupants who complied with officers’ orders to exit the home. During the process, a pit-bull dog came out of the residence and refused to comply with the verbal commands issued by one of the occupants. The dog then growled and lunged at one of the officers causing that officer to fear for his safety. This officer fired one round from his pistol at the dog and it died instantly.”

“During the ongoing investigation, the resident admitted to participating in target practice with a pellet gun in his rear yard, a violation of the Berkeley Municipal Code. Inside the home, officers located a pellet gun that resembled a semi-automatic handgun. The gun investigation has been concluded and the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s office.”

According to the Berkeley Daily Planet, the dog’s owner is Shay (Sean) ben Yishay. Yishay told the Planet that he and three others with him had purchased an Airsoft air pistol at Big 5 Sporting Goods after being told that it was legal for them to fire it in their back yard. According to Yishay’s brother, who contacted the Planet, Shay ben Yishay also asked the police officers if he could put his dog, Rock, on a leash as he was being led away from the house. He said that he and his companions had not been charged with any offense.

The police statement concludes: “All Use of Force incidents are thoroughly reviewed by BPD. No officer wants to be put in the position of using force, particularly deadly force, on animals or individuals, but sometimes must do so to protect him/herself, the safety of others and community safety.”

Berkeley resident Sue Tomasello said she is very troubled by the incident. In an email to Berkeley’s City Council members, she said: “I was very concerned when I heard about the dog that was shot and killed by a police officer on Saturday night. Why was the dog shot? Was the dog really a threat to the police? Is it true that the owner offered to secure the dog, but was not given permission? If the police felt threatened, wouldn’t it have been appropriate to call an animal control officer to help? Isn’t that one reason the City of Berkeley has an Animal Control Department? I understand the police often have to make decisions based on very little information, but were the circumstances really that dangerous at the time?”

Update 5:15 pm: Berkeleyside spoke to Sgt. Mary Kusmiss of the Berkeley Police Department this afternoon and asked why the dog’s owner was not allowed to get his dog and secure it on a leash. “The owner asked if he could go and get the dog and the supervisor decided not to allow him to do that because the supervisor felt the situation was not deemed safe at that moment,” said Sgt. Kusmiss. “They didn’t know if there were additional suspects inside that may be armed.”

“The dog came out and was growling around. It stopped in front of an officer, crouched, growled and started to leap up. The officer felt the animal was a threat to him.”

Berkeley’s deadly force policy allows an officer to dispatch an animal that poses a threat, said Sgt. Kusmiss. This fell under that policy, she said. This only happens a few times a year, she added.

Your very welcome, glad to help out.

Hopefully the blog will meet with success.

I'll post the especially egregious ones in their own thread.

Thanks for the two new ones. They have been posted to the blog.

We are, sadly, up to 14 postings. Not something to be proud of and unfortunately it will only grow.

You can either bump the thread here with new ones or give them their own thread. My feeling is that they should have their own thread and not cheapen the killings to save time. I think more people will see them that way also as opposed to being lumped into a single thread. Extremely thankful for the assistance... your postings of these over the past months is what really reinforced just how widespread these are.

whenever possible the name/rank of the murderer should be included; they know their department will do nothing, they know the DA or US attorney will do nothing, but the knowledge that they and their family will be ostracized could end this

Owners Distraught Over Shooting of Dog

Kalamazoo officers responded to the 100 Block of West Dutton to search for a suspect, when they fatally shot a dog.

http://www.wsbt.com/news/fox17-kalamazoo-officers-fatally-shoot-dog-20110408,0,2145546.story

KALAMAZOO— Police in Kalamazoo say an officer felt threatened Friday night, when a one year old pit bull was released into a backyard at a home on West Vine Avenue around 8 p.m. The officer shot the dog four times, according to the owners, killing her.

Kalamazoo Public Safety officers were tracking a suspect in the area of West Dutton and West Vine. The officers were checking the backyard and garage of a house, when the Morris family let Dot, a one year old pitt bull dog, out, unaware of the officer's presence. According to a police report, the dog aggressively charged one of the officers.

"We had no warning police were back there," Tara Morris told FOX 17 News. She cringed and fought back tears as she showed the spot where Dot died from the gunshot wounds.

Tara's husband, Charles Morris, was still reeling this morning. "She was laying here, still wagging her tail," Charles said. He says Dot was a friendly dog who never bit anyone, and believes she was excited, not attacking the officer.

The officer told superiors that he believed the dog was going to attack, and had no choice but to fire his weapon.
