BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) _ Supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment to eliminate North Dakota property taxes have turned in petitions to put the idea on the ballot. The measure was approved for circulation almost a year ago. Supporters had to turn in their paperwork by early next week. They brought almost 1,000 petitions containing more than 27,000 names to Secretary of State Al Jaeger's office on Friday. The measure's leader is Charlene Nelson of Casselton. The amendment abolishes property taxes in North Dakota, starting Jan. 1. The Legislature would have to figure out a way to replace the property tax revenues that local governments would lose. Jaeger now has 35 days to check the petitions and make sure they have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. The petitions need at least 26,904 names.

BISMARCK, N.D. — A ballot initiative that seeks to abolish North Dakota's property taxes is looking for signatures right up until Tuesday's deadline.

The initiative needs almost 27,000 signatures. Last week, the measure's supporters turned in about 800 extra names.

Charlene Nelson of Casselton is chairwoman of the initiative campaign. She says she'd like to see a cushion of more than 2,000 names.

Supporters of the anti-property tax proposal have until Tuesday to turn in signatures.

Secretary of State Al Jaeger has until late April to review the petitions. Some signatures usually get disqualified during the review process, so ballot measure backers try to get extra names.

Nelson's proposal is a constitutional amendment that would abolish property taxes. The Legislature would have to decide how replace the revenue local governments would lose.
