I'm not so sure about that, my understanding is that it was already a global phenomena and the archeological history backs it up that it was already a practice in the americas prior to columbus.

Perhaps so, But is was common practice to buy scalps (as a bounty).Especially during the French and English wars.
It was a very common practice in Europe.

But as I stated, Nothing New. Taking trophies on the battlefield is old and ugly history.
