Liberty Action Agenda for APRIL 2011 - Legislation for Congress

Oppose Raising the Debt Ceiling (http://www.votervoice.net/core.aspx?AID=972&Screen=alert&IssueId=24332&APP=GAC&SiteID=-1&VV_CULTURE=en-us)

With the national debt currently above $14.1 trillion, it is simply indefensible for Congress to continue unsustainable borrowing by voting for unconstitutional programs and entitlements that are bankrupting this country and not reduce the deficit. For a return to fiscal sanity, remind your Representative and Senators to vote “no” on raising the statutory debt limit, a first step toward reducing the ticking economic time bomb we call the national debt.

Support S. 162 (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s162/show), Cut Federal Spending Act of 2011

This act would cut $500 billion from the deficit in 2011, instead of the paltry $100 billion the House Republicans are shooting for. Already approved by a committee and placed on a calendar of business, this measure contains the deepest cuts in spending of any such proposals. Over $26 billion would be cut from Health and Human Services, along with a 62 percent reduction in funding for the FDA, 28 percent for CDC, elimination of the Department of energy, and an 83 percent decrease in funding for the Department of Education. This bill is far better than continually punting the ball down the road with stop-gap measures.

Support H.R. 91 (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h91/show) and S. 395 (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-s395/show) (The Better Use of Light Bulbs Act) and H.R. 849 (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h849/show) (Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act)

These bills would prevent the forced phase-out of the incandescent light bulb. Reinstating the incandescent light bulb as a choice for consumers is a matter of freedom and not an attack on energy conservation. It is an alternative to the mercury-containing compact fluorescents that are not turning out to be as economical to use as originally advertised, and that also pose a mercury poisoning hazard for homes, businesses, and landfills.

Support H.R. 358, The Protect Life Act (http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h358/show)

By reinstating the conscience clause, the medical civil liberties of health care workers would be protected. Under H.R. 358, hospitals and professional healthcare practitioners could not be forced to participate in or perform abortions that may be contrary to personal beliefs or principles.

Oppose Renewable Energy Standards Legislation

In an attempt to implement the White House’s agenda for a comprehensive energy package, Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-N.M.) is currently working on legislation that addresses the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, smart grid, and a federal mandate that calls for 10 percent of the nation’s electricity to come from renewable sources by 2012, and 25 percent by 2025. Separate legislation by Senators Amy Klobuchar, Mark Udall, and Tom Udall (the latter two are cousins) has already been introduced that would mandate renewable sources for electricity generation.

Support Introducing Freedom From Union Violence Act (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h111-2537)

This bill would close a loophole in the Hobbs Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobbs_Act). Current law exempts unions and their officials from union-related violent crime. Let’s ensure that the Hobbs Act applies to everyone, making union officials accountable for any violence they foment or commit.
