Apparently, legal charges have been filed against him (2,300 pages worth). He's being charged with having sex with an underage prostitute. She is(was?) 17.

2 slight problems...
The age of consent in Italy is 14
Prostitution is legal in Italy.

So what's up with these trumped up charges? Why do they want to get rid of him?

I keep hearing about this, but not a word about what the real issues are.

Anyone know?

Berlusconi is your typical corporatist and big enemy of liberty. He helped to topple Italy's state owned media, only to replace it with his state subsidized corporate media. He doesn't like Roma and uses them as an excuse for Italy's foolish decision to join the EU.

Age of consent is 14, but the age to legally engage in sex for money is 18.

Interesting - thanks.

Quick search makes it look like about 40% are underage (under 18).

Italy, like a few other European countries, doesn't criminalize the exchange of sex for money, but they do criminalize most of the activities that surround prostitution therefore still creating a big black market for sex. A lot of the Romanian, Ukrainian, and other eastern bloc girls trafficked in are underage. I wouldn't doubt that 40% number.
