That's 1000+ DUI's over a 6 day period. The total traffic citations must be around 15,000, at at least $50 per ticket. Checkpoints were in force. With cash like this generated Im expecting checkpoints to become more and more common.

Police arrested 1,013 drivers during North Carolina's St. Patrick's Day "Booze It and Lose It" campaign, and one of every eight DWI arrests happened in Mecklenburg County, state officials say.

Mecklenburg led the state in the number of drunk driving charges during the campaign, which took place March 11 to 17 and involved the N.C. Highway Patrol, sheriff's offices, and local police.

"This life-saving campaign removed more than 1,000 impaired drivers, which resulted in countless lives saved," said Gene Conti, North Carolina's Transportation Secretary.

There were 124 DWI arrests in Mecklenburg County, well ahead of runner-up Wake County's 94. Those are the two most populous counties in the state. In the Charlotte region, only one other county -- Cabarrus, with 26 -- had more than 20 DWI arrests during the campaign.

State officials said they also arrested 490 fugitives and recovered 24 stolen vehicles during the campaign, which included both checkpoints and what police call "saturation patrols," in which large numbers of law enforcement officers focus on specific highway corridors.

Here are some numbers from the campaign:
