This is actually pretty close to what I believe as well.

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/daily/2011/03/most-people-like-obama-as-a-person.html

Today Politico’s Ben Smith links to an interesting survey: according to a Quinnipiac University poll, just 46 percent of those asked say they approve of President Obama’s policies, but a full 75 percent say they like Obama as a person, and 20 percent say they don’t like him or his policies. Smith writes that the results suggest “we’re living in an unusual civil moment of unusually policy-based differences.” It’s certainly a surprise to the many of us who thought we were living in an age of birth-certificate-validity-based differences or the-correct-spelling-of-“socialism”-based differences.

In August, a Pew poll found that nearly one in five Americans think that Obama is a Muslim. At the time, Newsweek’s Jonathan Alter credited the pervasive sentiment to the fact that “more and more voters don’t like him personally and so are increasingly ready to believe anything critical (and to them, being Muslim is a negative) about someone they are already inclined to resent.” The 20 percent of people who dislike Obama—per the Quinnipiac poll—seems to corroborate this thesis.

Like him as a person? What does that mean?

I mean I've never met the guy it's really hard to determine what he is really like aside from politics.

It means I respect what he's accomplished and how he carries himself as a father and a man. I don't think it's easy to do what he does and I don't envy the position he's in.

I disagree with many of his policies but I hate extremists on all sides and I don't believe he is an evil guy petting a cat who loves bombing people and drinks blood, or that he is "going to assassinate me" as someone here already posted.

I do try to understand people with differing political views than me without assigning them demonic characteristics.

And there's just no question that he's not doing any worse than his predecessors. What's more, he's in the very unique position of being able to do a whole lot of good in terms of inspiration and expanded frontiers just by being who he is and taking The Oath. So, regardless of whether or not he just got cornered into getting us into a third war, he is a useful puppet in multiple ways--and more people than just the elite benefit from his presence.

If he's "such a good guy" in his private life, how does he reconcile droning Afghanistanis and launching Tomahawk missiles into Lybia? You can't be a balanced person if your professional actions don't reflect your personal ideals, IMO.

Also, not trying to compare Obama to Hitler, but I'm sure Adolf's family and friends thought of him as a great guy too.

I think that reasonable people can disagree on the wisdom of many policies. I think misguided but I don't think Obama "wants to bomb people for fun".

I disagree with many people I like even my friends and family on many political issues - doesn't mean I dislike them or think they're evil.

For the record I never really bought into the "Bush is evil" or "Bush hates black people" arguments either. Although he did strike me as a bit more boneheaded and obnoxious.

Most people are also fed a certain pre-filtered story about the personal life of Barrack Obama. They want people to like him "as a person".

Don't play the race card.

But its true.

You don't want to fall into the media narrative of being a racist for opposing Obama or his policies. So most people who oppose, nay hate, Obama's policies start off with "I like Obama as a person but ....".

You never had to do that with Bush if you hated his policies. You could just go "F*ck Bush and his policies about ...."

I've never met a President, but as far as guys go, I'd much rather hang out with Dubya. I can't see having much to talk about with Barack.

I think Clinton would be a much better guy to hang with than either George W or Obama. However out of all the president Gerald Ford...he was really nice on The Simpsons.

Unfortunately, he's more stiff in his manner than ever, more boring than ever and getting kinda smelly.

Of the living ex-presidents I would want to hang with none of them. If I had to, I'd probably pick Carter.

The "father" role hasn't impressed me so much. While he's been quick to protect his daughters form the media, etc ... he's also just as quick to parade them around when it suits his interests.

Edit:
Don't forget, he has directed the justice department to defend the position that the president can declare somebody a terrorist and assassinate that person - even a US citizen - without trial. Ron Paul supporters have been generically branded potential domestic terrorists. So, don't be so sure you're safe.

I would still have a beer with him. Especially at a Texas Rangers ballgame.

Not me. He only drinks 'near beer', and that stuff is nasty. But, I'd have to drink it. Not out of courtesy, but out of a different kind of courtesy--I tend to avoid alchohol when I'm near someone whose nose I wish to flatten.

I think that a person lacks a moral compass if their policies do not reflect their beliefs. Therefore lacking a liking for his policies would leave me to dislike the person themselves. Not to mention he shows a level of callousness and disregard for even the most basic level of humanity repeatedly lately in his behavior and his words.

Stupid comment I agree. Doubt it is influencing people in a poll though.
