Suppose that we all wanted Burt Rutan to run for political office because he is a genius, charasmatic, and has done alot of good with his space and air innovations. But if he actually ran for President wouldn't this take away from the Virgin Galactic/Scaled Compositer project? He would spend all kinds of money on his campaign and suppose he were to win. He would limit NASA's role further and cut FAA regulations but how many more and better space/air designs could he have come up with and sold to Virgin Galactic?

Potentially the increase in productivity from others as a result of his regulation reform could outweigh the loss of his own productive capacity.
