Several coutries already use them. I believe Austraila has polymer notes. Yep- they were the first ones- in 1988. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polymer_banknote

I'd be surprised if plastic is cheaper than paper and ink, I think it's just harder to counterfeit.

Actually our "paper" money is cotton and linen.

Probably, doing this to get people ready for the cashless society. If they can get the sheeple to handle "plastic" money, then they can easily transfer it all over to "electronic plastic". By By Cash and hello slavery.

People do use mostly plastic card money today- about ten percent of the US money supply is in the form of paper or coins.
