It was a 8.9 - the 7th largest in recorded history.

One city in Japan is reported as totaled - nothing left.

In about 1900 a 9.0 earthquake hit off the coast of Washington/Oregon and Japan saw 3-4' high waves. Remember, these are traveling at hundreds of miles per hour. Not your average wave.

Expected to hit Hawaii at 3am local time with waves up to 6-8' tall.

Expected to hit Califormia at 8:20am PST

If you live on the west coast, near the sea - get inland!

We got the tsunami sirens blasting out here (Hawaii), should have a better clue around 11:55 p.m. HST, and a real solid clue around 2:55 a.m.

Calling for evacuation, the panic is on -gas stations, grocery stores etc.

Glad to be at 2000' -even if we're 12 miles from the latest eruption, gonna be a long night. :(

Not exactly inland. It is somewhat "protected".

I'd call 'em, great excuse to bother them/wake 'em up;). Let them at least know and make their own decision.

Don't take chances with a tsunami, remember that it's government giving out these warnings....

Common sense trumps all.

We're several hundred miles south of Tokyo and were expecting one about two hours ago. Anyway, nobody is giving the results. The gate guard said he heard 22 ft. That's impossible. I figure at most 2.2 meters and more likely 22 centimeters. The sirens were blasting from 5pm on with announcements. The military evacuated Camps Kinser and Lester, Okuma Joint Recreation Facility and some other low lying areas on the other bases. Most locals I'm talking with were expecting something about 1 meter high. I'm not sure what the tide times are today.
All the people down on the beaches are evacuating to higher ground, just to be safe.
Current death total for Japan: 39.
Okay, they just reported Minami Daito Island (small island to our east) had a 0.2 meter tsunami, so except for worrying about another one coming, things look reasonably safe.

This is some really crazy seismic activity this past week. China had a big earthquake kills a few dozen, New Zealand had a big one, Hawaii's volcano collapsed, and Japan has been getting hit with big quakes all this week. Something stirring up the faults.

I've been getting some updates from this guy who also says haarp is interfering with the weather which he makes some good points in his videos. I'm not an expert and I still take his word lightly but he has me thinking and looking things up.

Hawaiians brace for 6-foot tsunami waves

The evacuation area includes Waikiki, but wave heights are expected to be lower there because of a barrier reef.

Faced with mounting foreign and domestic pressure, Japan’s government has been forced to rethink how to handle the country’s huge market in child pornography, raising hopes for an overdue ban on possession.

While it is illegal to produce or distribute child pornography in Japan, possessing it is not – an anomaly Japan shares with only one other G8 nation, Russia. The release last month of national police agency figures showing a dramatic rise in the number of known child pornography cases coincides with new calls for the government to take action. Yet, say campaigners, national legislators lack the political will to change the law

Thx, my daughter spends a lot of time on the beach with our granddaughter. She is always sending pictures of the two of them on the beach. Strangely enough just a couple of days ago she sent one of the baby buried up to her waist in sand. We thought it was cute until now...

Washington (CNN) -- President Barack Obama said the United States "stands ready to help the Japanese people" slammed by a destructive tsunami.

Well, son of a bitch.

Maybe he should suck the water out of there with his big mouth.

Quick Update

We did not feel the earthquake here in Okinawa, and the tsunami appears to have caused no damage or had any significant effect on Okinawa.

As you can see from the photos, the tsunami caused the ocean to retreat and then return quickly over the space of several minutes. There was no noticeable wave however.

The main danger would have been if people had wandered out onto the beach when it appeared to suddenly be low tide. (Many Okinawans collect seaweed or shellfish when the tide is low.) There were continual warnings from loudspeakers telling locals not to go to the beach. Any I couldn’t see anyone on the beach from my vantage point.

Thoughts go out to those in Sendai who were hit by the full force of the tsunami.
