Army of Fake Social Media Friends to Promote Propaganda

It's recently been revealed that the U.S. government contracted HBGary Federal for the development of software which could create multiple fake social media profiles to manipulate and sway public opinion on controversial issues by promoting propaganda. It could also be used as surveillance to find public opinions with points of view the powers-that-be didn't like. It could then potentially have their "fake" people run smear campaigns against those "real" people. As disturbing as this is, it's not really new for U.S. intelligence or private intelligence firms to do the dirty work behind closed doors.

EFF previously warned that Big Brother wants to be your friend for social media surveillance. While the FBI Intelligence Information Report Handbook (PDF) mentioned using "covert accounts" to access protected information, other government agencies endorsed using security exploits to access protected information.

It's not a big surprise that the U.S. military also wants to use social media to its benefit. Last year, Public Intelligence published the U.S. Air Force social media guide which gave 10 tips for social media such as, "The enemy is engaged in this battlespace and you must engage there as well." Number three was "DON'T LIE. Credibility is critical, without it, no one cares what you have to say...it's also punishable by the UCMJ to give a false statement." The Air Force used the chart below to show how social media influences public opinion.

JDA (http://www.jrdeputyaccountant.com/2011/02/why-did-us-military-buy-500-fake.html) wrote a great blog post on this. Highlights:

The answer to the question "why does the government need software to create a bunch of fake Internet "people?" is probably quite simple, and while Daily Kos seems to feel it has to do with attacking progressives, I'm afraid the aim of the purchase is far more subversive and far-reaching. Leave it to libtards to take it personally and ignore the fact that there is an ongoing war against Americans, waged by their own government, that has so far claimed our privacy, freedom and now our economic well-being.

I also remind Daily Kos here that the American progressive is already an extinct creature, replaced by leftist maniacs too drunk on their own perceived invincibility to realize that they're the ones holding the torches as Rome burns. I have no problem with progressives and could probably play one on TV as I believe in crazy ideas like advancing knowledge and equal rights and am fascinated by the sociology of economics, all matters progressives tend to say they are into. I believe gays should be allowed to marry but churches should be allowed to say they refuse to marry them (that's the whole separation of church and state we seem to have forgotten about). Just as the true conservative has been replaced with a holier-than-thou army of Christian fundamentalist freaks who obviously haven't read a Bible lately since the one I read said something about "love your brother" and "judge not lest ye be judged," we are once again losing the battle by fighting amongst ourselves over semantics instead of attacking the true enemy.
[...]
Anyway. The really bad news is that this isn't theoretical, the Air Force actually secured the rights to 500 fake personas, claiming they'd be used at MacDill AFB, Kabul, Afghanistan and Baghdad, Iraq. Strange, MLM bots manage to do this on Twitter all the time and don't need to shell out huge amounts of money to do it.

It's happening, people, the question is whether you'll be standing there arguing with a fake sockpuppet of the establishment or shoving your foot up his or her fictitious ass when it happens to you.

All of those Military Intelligence pukes have James Bond fantasies that lead them to do stupid stuff. Here we have a perfect example.

The internet is a useful communications tool between known entities. As a public forum for recruitment, it leaves much to be desired - if it funnels interested people into an functioning entity - fine. But as an open forum to meet or create a community - not efficient at all.

I´ve noticed trolls are quite trollsome, or they´re really good. Some are paid, and others do it for free. Makes me think of the coordinated efforts to bash Ron Paul.

Thinking about media, just take at all the astroturfing comments on the latest Krugman drivel. Can you spot the keywords? Often appearing 9/10 comments in the first sentence. http://community.nytimes.com/comments/www.nytimes.com/2011/03/04/opinion/04krugman.html?permid=1#comment1

So how do we respond? I say reciprocate.

My alter ego on Yahoo! posts radical stuff, like inciting a revolt of the tax slaves. Here are some things I have posted in the past, and repost, repost, repost:

All of you commies who support the income tax need to be shamed and humiliated again in 2012. Democrats are spiteful, envious malcontents who can destroy prosperity but can't create it. Keep voting out the Marxists, and reform the Republican party so it stops cooperating with the Democrats and their socialist agenda.

American workers have become TAX SLAVES because of the liberal's Marxist agenda for the last 100 years. In 1912 the income tax was established, with the promise that only a few top income brackets would pay income tax. During WWII, payroll withdrawal of taxes was started, so the government could rob workers money before they even got it. Now we are tax slaves, cattle to be harvested by the political Establishment.
Time for a TAX REVOLT! End the income tax, let workers and investors keep the money they earn. Replace the income tax with a 5% national sales tax. Cut government by half or more. End the Federal Reserve System and return to honest money.
Communism is so 1930's, time to advance to a new, fairer and just ideology: freedom.

You commie Democrats can lie and distort facts and history all you want. Ultimately here is the truth: American workers are tax slaves for the political Establishment because of the Marxist income tax.
Envious, spiteful hatemonger Democrats don't care if they are slaves for their political masters, as long as they believe that the most productive people in society are being taxed more than they are.
Democrats are such fools, enslaved by their own evil ideology. Freedom means nothing to them, no wonder they reject anything that supports freedom.

100 years ago there was no income tax. Workers kept what they earned. Why do so many people think government owns us, and lets us keep some of our money?
Democrats think government should take more of our money. Republicans think government should take a little less of our money. I say both parties are ignorant and blind. WE SHOULD NOT BE SLAVES FOR THE GOVERNMENT!
End the income tax, end the Federal Reserve, cut government by at least a half. Fund the federal government with a 5% sales tax, and demand they live within their budget like all of us must do.

Democrats are ignoramuses that were miseducated in government run schools. The indoctrinators neglected to inform you liberals that roads are paid with GAS TAXES. So your moronic statements that "if there were no income taxes there would be no roads" only shows how government is a failure at teaching children the facts.

For many years I avoided computers (like a plague). I saw the violations of privacy, and the "One World" implications. The information collection and sharing.
Avoiding it did not make me safer.
When I was refinancing my home, I found that all the information on me was already out there. The only one that did not have access or control of it was me.

So I got a computer in 2003. And I learned to use it.
I may not be able to stop any of the nefarious plans, but at least I am here to put my spin on my information.
