Sadly, it looks like it is true indeed. From the horse's mouth (or possibly another orifice):

REAL ID Final Rule

The Department of Homeland Security has issued a final rule to establish minimum standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards in accordance with the REAL ID Act of 2005.

These regulations set standards for states to meet the requirements of the REAL ID Act, including:

* information and security features that must be incorporated into each card;
* proof of identity and lawful status of an applicant;
* verification of the source documents provided by an applicant; and
* security standards for the offices that issue licenses and identification cards.

This final rule also provides a process for states to seek an additional extension of the compliance deadline to May 11, 2011, by demonstrating material compliance with the core requirements of the Act and this rule.

As of last year, 23 states were refusing to comply, mostly because it was an unfunded mandate they couldn't afford. I have a hard time believing they'll all comply that quickly... the deadline keeps being pushed back because of this, and I would guess it will again. It is true we need to keep up the urgency of our fight against it...

Kentucky is one of that won't comply, albeit unofficially. We attempted to officially refuse with a resolution, which passed the Democrat controlled House unanimously but was stopped by the Republican Senate President, David Williams. This anti-liberty idiot is running for governor now, and our pro-liberty & states rights candidate, Phil Moffett (http://www.philmoffett.com) has wide support from liberty/tea party types in Kentucky, but without some fundraising help like Rand had will likely be unable to compete. Though Moffett may not be a Ron Paul original, I am, and think he's worthy of support. There are only a few governor's elections this year, and if we want to advance state's rights, it'd really help to win this. I also don't feel like symbolically giving back control of the party to the Establishment we beat last year by letting their annointed win. :)

First, I see nothing about the RLC at that link.

Second, I sure as hell ain't clicking on a DHS link, but a google search of the phrase
real id may 2011
brings up no websites I've heard of and a bunch of blogs with names like "we're all gonna die" and "the end of the world as we know it."

The only legit-seeming link about it is a snopes article. They're almost always correct, and they're pretty libertarian-leaning:

Sort of debunks it, sorta not. check it out.

This was mandated a bunch of years ago and they keep issuing extensions because it's not economically feasible, and because a lot of people consider it "the mark of the beast", either literally or figuratively.

bottom line is all will comply to operate in the us! real id will happen thanks to gop/dnc corruption! the powers to be will make it happen no matter what we do. I/We will to continue to fight but i think we are screwed unless some tipping point happens asap! our country might be beyond saving as is!!

They've been extending the deadline every year since May 2008. REAL ID has failed.

CA just started issuing completely different new drivers licenses a few months ago, I wonder if they are compliant with these requirements, I can't seem to find anything saying that you need to present all that extra identification in order to renew your license.

Is this one of those things where you have to take a hammer to the card on that little tiny square spot, like I did my credit card?

I just got my new Ca drivers' license. They warned me by mail to order it way in advance because they are backed up. It is thicker, has magnetic strip and this weird bar code ish thing (not really a bar code but a computer block of some sort). Not happy, but I need a license to drive.

I have seen on the internet where you can get these 'pockets' for id to keep them from transmitting to id stripping devices while you are sitting at the airport, etc. Anyone have any idea if they really work?

The RLC posted it on Facebook as a warning and a call to action.

Thanks for your answer. It reassures me that this will not pass. :)

You must be joking? :mad: Why then does DHS say it is going into effect in May, 2011??

The law passed in 2005... it's already a law. But because it's an unfunded mandate, most states are not complying. I suppose over time, we might see gradual implementation, even if it is not by this date. We DO need to be fighting back against it.

Only good thing is, with our country going broke, perhaps it won't get funding. Cutting funding is a great way to slow/stop legislation that you don't have the numbers to repeal outright...
