This is not an onion article. This is real and could happen any time this week.
Recently the Associated Press asked the Illinois State Police for its list of Illinois gun owners. The police refused saying that the release of the names and addresses of all those registered firearm owners in Illinois would be a violation of their privacy but Illinois Attorney General Democrat Lisa Madigan disagrees with the police and has ruled that the list should be released to the press.

Might I suggest not going the traditional (err legal) route for your next firearm.

Lisa Madigan is an anti-gun Chicago machine prodigy. It would certainly further her (and her family's) agenda for more stolen guns to end up on the street. Everyones home on the list potentially becomes subject to criminal surveillance to determine when it vacant.

bleah!
I think this was tried with concealed carry permits in Virginia and there was a lawsuit.
We don't have gun registration in Wyoming, but state law forbids releasing info on who has a carry permit. State law also forbids letting the feds do door-to-door gun confiscation. I know the feds would ignore that if it ever came to it, but it's nice that our ranchislators put it in state law.

I do know that the feds are subservient to the Sheriff unless the feds are there to enforce a constitutional law.

Better yet, why not release the names and addresses of all households that don't have any firearms?

I remember something like this a few years back and I think it was Virginia. Some local gun clubs started posting newspaper editors, politicians, local anti support groups home addresses and phone numbers on the internet. Kinda like on this thread. All public record stuff of course. Nothing ilegal. Seems they weren't to happy with that. I mean what's fair is fair I guess. They also started a boycott of advertisers, car dealers, such. I believe it had some success.

Well, that's the Sheriff Richard Mack / Oathkeepers take on it, and I agree, in theory. In action, the Patriot Act, and just 70 years of federal expansion in general, superceeds that with "We know what's best for you lowly peasants."
Better yet, why not release the names and addresses of all households that don't have any firearms?
Actually I assume that's what they are doing as well. So now the criminals know where to find the guns and then where to use them. The people in Illinois need to bring back a good ole tar and feathering.

Yeah, it would be a simple process of elimination to figure out which homes were defenseless.
