I wasn’t going to write anything about Charlie Sheen’s career suicide this week, since I don’t watch Two and a Half Men or much episodic television at all these days. Sheen appeared on the Alex Jones radio show yesterday, not an unusual place for a Truther to make an appearance, and went on a bizarre-even-for-Sheen rant that included anti-Semitic comments about his show’s producer and co-creator, Chuck Lorre, calling him “Hymie Levine” (Levine is Lorre’s birth name). CBS responded by putting the show on hiatus the rest of the season, and probably won’t bring it back, at least not with Sheen.

I wonder why this excellent deli hasn't been shut down yet for anti-semitism? I've actually eaten here and it is great food.

Another article I read quoted Sheen as calling Lorre "Chaim Levine," saying that that was his actual name, which it apparently is.

I wade carefully into this issue--and I don't really care to support Sheen--but if that's Lorre's real name, then what makes it anti-semitic to call him that? Aren't the actual anti-semites the ones who say that there's something insulting about calling a guy by his actual name, just because that name sounds Jewish?

That's what I heard.

Was there supposed to be an anti-Semitic remark somewhere in that? I didn't see one, and I should be pretty quick to spot it being half-Jewish myself.

It's called "character assassination". A tried and true tactic.

Why does everything always turn into accusations of antisemitism?

Because unfortunately it works.,

Very true. Nothing is more effective than calling someone an antisemite, the tactic might be used even if a person says nothing negative about Israel or a Jewish person. I'm hoping people are waking up to this, though.

Dumb question - why the name change?

In Charlie Sheen's case, it's just character suicide.

You're not arrived until you've been accused of "anti-semitism."

Shouldn't the ADL be concerned with other racist things? Such as the law in Israel where a Jew and Arab are not allowed to legally marry?

I didn't hear what he said, but from what I've read so far I think Sheen's comment was related to the guy being Jewish (not necessarily in a bad way) and not just pointing out the name change. Carlos Irwin Estevez is in no position to criticize someone for changing their name.

That's a joke right? There's a shit ton of jews in hollywood, politics, or other public entities where having an openly jewish name isn't preferred because it may/will turn off a large portion of the audience due to prejudice or just plain difficulty pronouning the name. The list of name changers is VERY long.

An example that made its way around this forum lately was that John Stewart's real name is John Liebowitz. There's a lot of people that wouldn't watch the show if it was called The Daily Show with John Liebowitz. Stewart is an Americanized name to bring support that might not be there otherwise.

Yea, but look at Whoopi Goldberg. That's an example of changing a person's name to sound more Jewish in order to get more of a chance in Hollywood.

Also, I'm pretty sure that in order to be a member of the screen actors guild you cannot have the same name as someone else. I don't know how it is with producers, editors, directors, writers, etc.

It was a serious question to which I never gave much thought. So its a marketing ploy. Ok.

This is the second most shocking claim I have heard since a critic of Obama was called "anti-semitic" in youtube chat.

Wilhelm Marr, the guy who coined the term "anti-semetism", had this to say about Jews:

It is no ostentatious prophecy but a deeply felt conviction when I say that no more than four generations shall pass before the Jews usurp absolutely every office of state, including the very highest.

Same reason Jon Stewart changed his Jewish last name and Nic Cage and Jon Bon Jovi changed their Italian last names. And Charlie Sheen changed from his Spanish name. Fit in with the dominant culture.

I don't think it matters as much any more. 20-30 years ago yes it did.

Some got away with it even 70 years ago though. Frank Sinatra comes to mind.
