Dismissal notices were sent to every public school teacher in Providence as a precaution because the budget process is still ongoing, a news release from the city said Tuesday.

The release said the notices were sent to comply with a state law that says teachers must be notified about potential layoffs by March 1.

Superintendent Thomas Brady, who called the moved unprecedented, said in a letter to teachers that the the school district is projecting a $40 million deficit in the school budget for 2011-2012.

Frank Flynn, president of the Rhode Island Federation of Teachers, said, "The absurdity of it, is that they won't terminate all 19-hundred teachers. It's unconscionable that they'd cause this much anxiety and pain to people who've given their lives to teach."

The School Board will consider the layoff resolution at its meeting at 6:30 PM Thursday. That will be on the third floor of the Roberti Administration Building on 797 Westminster Street.
