CHICAGO – Former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has been elected mayor of Chicago, to succeed the retiring Richard Daley. With 86 percent of the precincts reporting, Emanuel was trouncing five opponents Tuesday with 55 percent of the vote to avoid an April runoff. Emanuel needed more than 50 percent of the vote to win.

A friend went to the debate last week and said he and the other candidates were all unimpressive, mostly talking about their resumes, not what they would actually do.

As someone who has experience in Chicago politics I can confidently say that you are correct sir. Every other candidate was "visited" & "informed" that they would be "losing" this "election".

Then you haven't for a second participated in electoral politics in Chicago. Everything that has anything to do with the political machine here is rigged. The "rules" here are known by everybody who lives here. They have NOTHING to do with the "law". The people who really run this city wanted Rahm, the "rules" don't mean shit. Elections here are a fraud, we have dead people who vote regularly.

Everyone knew he was going to win before he even announced. The local media--newpapers & talk radio--pretty much have a stranglehold on this city. They constantly wail about the corruption but nothing is ever done to fix it. It's a political cesspool that leeches off the overtaxed, smart and successful residents. The problem is that it has incredible resources--museums, music, sports, Lake Michigan... really second only to New York. So much potential that is being taken advantage of.
