There was something in western S. America, too. It's all part of the "ring of fire" (cue Johnny Cash music). As tectonic plates shift, pressure builds along fault lines and there are earthquakes and eruptions. Some places, there is little pressure build-up and lots of tiny earthquakes nobody notices much. Then there are places where things get caught up and pressure builds until something gives.
Usually here, we get about 6-9,000 tremors a year. But last year, we had that 7.2 that lasted what seemed forever. Buildings around here are built to take that kind of abuse (and cat 5 typhoons, too) but we were concerned about a tsunami for awhile. I think there was one but less than a meter high.
On the IRIS seismic Monito website, you can see the red circles for recent earthquakes on the map.

U.S has personnel in Chch for Scott Base Antarctica and has offered help. It's horrendous. People trapped in buildings everywhere. So far 17 confirmed dead.Can't get hold of friends but lines are being over used so will wait awhile.
There was an army conference going on at the time and a medical conference. So all those doctors and army personnel are coming in handy.

I would still prefer that CNN and BBC stick to the Tripoli story as this is a natural disaster and the other is a disaster of malevolent forces which needs media exposure desperately!!!CNN seems to be giving more coverage to our earthquake.

Thankyou for your messages of support. It is horrible. We really are so lucky to have so many earthquakes in this country and yet we have not had an earthquake tragedy like this since 1931.
The main Canterbury TV station was badly hit with the building next door catching on fire which spread into the rubble where people are known to be alive as they are communicating on cell phones. The firemen have to be careful to not drown survivors with firehoses so have quite a nerve-wracking job. Airport and hospital now open.
They have rescued 120 people overnight, some completely unscathed, some needing amputation in order to be extracted.
Cell phones have now gone dead but rescuers believe its because they've gone flat.
In the last 20 minutes they've taken one person out alive and have found a pocket of 15 people alive. Hard to believe...the building is flattened and smouldering.
It was a cold wet night to be trapped with bad aftershocks so they would be feeling rough, and hanging out for a coffee no doubt...or just a glass of water would be good.
There are 55 identified bodies, 20 bodies unidentified and there are 300 missing.
Most of the damage is in the CBD but the outlying suburbs are badly compromised as well.

The rescue effort is being brilliantly co-ordinated and the Aussies have arrived (always lift your spirits, do the Aussies)
You may have seen the City Cathedral. The bell tower and spire collapsed and it was full of tourists at the time and it is too unsafe for Search and Rescue to go in at this stage, but early checks indicated no survivors at this stage.
US has offered more help (sorry Ron but thanks) as have Japan,Taiwan and UK.
People are abandoning the city as they have had enough and the aftershocks are violent.
80% of the city is without water, the reservoirs destroyed.
We only have 4 million in this country so everyone knows someone (almost inbred). It affects everyone deeply.
I'd been arranging to do a post-grad diploma down there starting next week so have been talking to many Christchurch uni staff on the phone and email. Chatting about the last earthquake and asking how they have been coping. Well of course i have no idea how any of these people are and am just keeping off the phones as phone lines are reserved for essential calls.

You know what, I reckon that city is not going to make it. Who would want to live there after what they have all been through? Ground liquifying, trauma on top of trauma...
