President Obama vows to launch a nationalization of wireless internet, similar to FDR's New Deal Keynesian programs, such as the Rural Electrification Administration.

Expanding coverage is the same as Nationalization? Nationalization says that there will be no private companies offering wireless services. Did rural electrification "nationalize" electricity?

nationalization

Definition
Takeover of privately owned corporations, industries, and resources by a government with or without compensation. Common reasons for nationalization include (1) prevention of unfair exploitation and large-scale labor layoffs, (2) fair distribution of income from national resources, and (3) to keep means of generating wealth in public control

It is a separate question as to whether the government should pay for the expansion.

"We want to invest in the next generation of high-speed wireless coverage for 98% of Americans," Obama told a crowd of about 1,400 at NMU. "It's towns like this where our economic future will be won."

About two-thirds of U.S. homes have Internet access now, he said.

He said the U.S. has adapted to change since its earliest years, from the development of the railroad system to the construction of power lines that brought electricity to all Americans to roads and bridges that connected towns, big cities and states.

"But this is a new century," he said. "For our families and businesses, high-speed wireless service is the next train station, the next off-ramp."

Obama wants to double the wireless spectrum available for mobile broadband and invest $5 billion in building access into rural areas. Most of the freed-up spectrum would be auctioned to broadband providers, raising an estimated $27.8 billion over 10 years.

He proposed using $9.6 billion to reduce the deficit.

He also proposed a $10.7-billion investment to ensure public safety communication systems are interoperable, allowing improved communications between police departments.
