It's become a wasteland.

I'd call that 50% success.

Hey now, lay off those Detroit folks, they's be livin' in MadMax times.

I just spent my birthday in downtown Detroit, had a great time. There's lots to do in a small area, but miles of blight, tax-feeding, and prohibition wars surround it.

Gonna need to put those 60 students per class in a zoo setting for sure. 60 morons per class? Maybe a charter school will pop up or better yet a madrassa.

If only. Another problem with Detroit is that they will not allow the suburbs to assist with anything, so will not likely accept their offers to take some of these students. It's sad how the govt functions down there, but it is all entirely predictable with some Rothbardian class analysis.

An Islamic school would indeed be better, as there is a large Muslim population in and around Detroit. I know that there are many mosques in the area, but from what I've seen most of the schooling is left to the government schools (Dearborn has its own school district with a high Muslim population, and does quite well compared to nearby districts).

The dems are already crowing that this highly predictable phenomenon is INDIRECTLY the republicans' fault. The democrats have controlled Detroit and Michigan for decades & have run it into the ground. Of course, their tax base is going to erode and leave elsewhere.

Detroit City would do better by taking the perpetual failing students and moving them into an abandoned auto-factory.

The kids could refurbish it, and then learn a trade.

They could earn a little cash, learn life skills, and feel productive for the first time in their lives.

I would buy a car made by inner city kids in Detroit.

Could be self funding in the end.

That's what already happened to the city: all the Republicans went to the 'burbs, and left the unionized tax feeders to consume themselves. Unfortunately racial makeup correlated to political leanings, and now the City plays the race card against people who want to have Detroit be a marvelous place again. It's what I alluded to above:

According to Gatto, the original public schools in England, which were modeled after an Indian program meant to maintain their caste system, accommodated up to 1000 "students" under one instructor.
So 20 students per class is actually a really inefficient number.
Typical government - they can even find an outrageously inefficient way to brainwash youth.

They still have schools?

They have buildings that have the word school written on them. None of the people inside know how to read it though (not even the new superintendent Bob Bobb).

Some guy offered detroit $200million of his own money if they would let him setup charter schools. They turned it down because the teachers union was afraid of the competititon.

Empty buildings. All the kids were out knocking over 7-11s.

I hope the teacher union dies a terrible terrible death. I would replace a striking teacher union worker in a heartbeat. They didn't learn how to teach despite having a graduate degree anyway.
