Mayor Dave Bing is trying to save Detroit by offering incentives to lure residents back to abandoned neighborhoods.

One program offers $150,000 in housing renovation money and requiring only $1,000 down to police officers (http://www.detnews.com/article/20110216/METRO/102160333/1408/local/Midtown-drives-remaking-of-Detroit) who are willing to relocate to the city. Another offers college graduates (http://livemidtown.org/incentives) $2,500 to rent and $20,000 forgivable loan to buy properties.
Potential home buyers can choose from plenty of cheap or free homes, especially in the blighted neighborhoods of Woodward Ave. and Brush Park.\

If they gave me all of that, and a M16 and 1000 rounds of ammunition, and a couple of high class hookers, I'd still have to think about it.

Where is the City of Detroit getting the Money?

THEY ARE BROKE and already running big deficits... Is this part of Barry's Bailouts, just one room down from Barry's Bail Bonds?

"high class hookers" ... aren't they all?

Probably upping everyones property taxes so that even more people will move out of what is left

Exactly.

I dunno, 150k period could lure me there (but I ain't a cop so..). I would simply arm myself up the keister, buy plenty of food etc and prepare for the siege. :D

Still not for me. I've been to Detroit. It didn't impress me in any way. Not one. I mean jeez, even NYC had good food.

Hehe. I can only base my Detroit experience on one visit some years ago and that was enough for me as well.

The sad part is that Detroit used to be one of the greatest cities in the country. Look a the pictures of those houses. They would be beautiful if they were restored. The problem is the surroundings and the neighborhoods that those houses are in, they just reminds me of pictures I've seen of buildings in the USSR. It just feels abandoned and depressed. I don't know how anyone could be happy living in a place that looks like that even if the houses were better.

Will they pay me to move a house to my area instead? :)

Hell, some of those houses are beautiful. I'd gladly have one of those over the crappy chicken wire, styrofoam, and stucco houses that are all over the place here now.

Based on current market conditions in Detroit, we expect that the renovated homes will likely appraise for $40,000-$80,000 in the target areas listed above.

LOL, why would somebody abandon them if they're worth that much?

I'd demolish entire blocks and put in farm land back in.
