A truck carrying a billboard with a running tally of the number of Americans killed by gun violence since the January 8 massacre in Tucson departed New York on Wednesday for a two month tour of 25 U.S. states.

The Arizona shootings left U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 12 others wounded, and six dead.

As the billboard left Times Square the tally of those killed in gun violence since the Tucson incident was given as 1,300, with another 24 added by mid-morning.

The truck is the idea of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Mayors Against Illegal Guns -- a group of more than 500 leaders of U.S. cities who want the U.S. Congress to pass laws requiring stiffer background checks for gun buyers.

I'll let you run things. ;)

Isn't it ironic though that at some point the only way to enforce these anti-gun laws is through the use of a gun?

And what is an illegal gun? Did it cross the border without papers? Did it slap someone? Did it commit an act of fraud? Nouns aren't illegal.

And where is the running total of those killed or wounded in knife attacks for a side by side comparison?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110214/ap_on_re_us/us_stabbing_spree

Here is one guy accounting for 4 and 4 by just one guy in NYC in one day.

1 35 cent .45 round would have solved that problem with rapidity.

Well, obviously - we must ban all knives immediately - or at least require background checks to do so! Follow England's example - and ban breakable glassware and bottles while you are at it. They did!

.35 cents .45 rounds? - where do you buy your ammo dude???? ME WANTS!

You'd have my vote. Especially if you use the same strategy to stop drug crime.

I have every confidence that it would work equally well.

Maybe it's just where I live, or the prominence of Giulianni and Bloomberg, but mayors seem to be professional badge lickers. I've never seen or heard of a mayor who even pretended not to be completely bought and sold by the police unions.

So do I - still seems like .50 a rounds.... :(

Few times I've "invited" the cops over it's make them very uncomfortable. The M-14 more so. When I get the Barrette, I will probably have to hand out diapers... :D

And how many people have died in car accidents since the Tuscon shootings? How many died because of 'democracy' being spread since then?

My gf's best friend's bf nearly died in a random knifing incident in Philadelphia a month ago. Random dude stabbed him in the neck on the street. Same guy killed another dude right before that.

We could save a lot more lives if we ban automobiles. 50,000 people on avg die per year in these deadly weaponized machines.

Yes, government has killed over 100 million in the 20th century. That does not include deaths of soldiers in war; all due to democide.

This really sounds like a reckless stunt. America has a tradition of shooting at billboards. Parading a moving one past them is beyond being dumb, I don't care about the political gain you may perceive out of it. I hope no innocent bystanders get caught up in this foolishness.
