In the 1850′s, the Federal Fugitive Slave Act was passed and required northern States to send alleged runaway slaves back to the south – no questions asked. No trial, no witnesses. Nothing. Many heroic northern states resisted – so much so that when South Carolina gave its official reason for secession, the first issue named was the fact that Northern states were nullifying federal slave laws.

On March 5, 2011, Nullify Now! celebrates this brave resistance to slavery by states and individuals on the Underground Railroad through the story of Joshua Glover – one of the best stories most Americans have never heard.

Glover was a slave in Missouri who managed to escape from his master. In 1854, with the help of the Underground Railroad, he made his way north, all the way to Wisconsin. Unfortunately for Glover, his former master eventually managed to find out where he was.

Because of the Federal Fugitive Slave Act, he was thrown in jail and was to be sent back to his so-called “owner.” But things didn’t happen that way, and the people of Wisconsin rallied to his support in one of history’s greatest examples of nullification – on March 11, 1854 – Glover was a free man!

At Nullify Now! Cincinnati, you’ll learn:

* the details of this harrowing tale of tyranny, courage, dedication…and liberty
* how such actions provide us lessons for activism and freedom today
* how we can roll back unconstitutional expansions of federal power through nullification
* why the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution reserves to the states the power to nullify unconstitutional laws
* why states – not the Supreme Court – should arbitrate disputes between the states and the federal government over the constitutionality of the federal government’s actions.
* and much more…

Because the Supreme Court has for many years interpreted the Constitution in a manner to further empower the federal government, states are moving to take power back from the feds through a growing and vibrant nullification movement. By Patrick Krey

Nullification in a Nutshell (http://www.thenewamerican.com/index.php/history/american/2971-nullification-in-a-nutshell)

The modern-day nullification movement has as its genesis the principle of federalism and the writings of James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, in particularly the famous Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1798, supporting the right of states to nullify unconstitutional federal usurpations.
