Strange days indeed when the only two Republicans in the Senate who have the slightest idea of what freedom is, vote in solidarity with the Senate's solitary socialist.

Good for Rand and Lee!

And only 9 Democrats, and they're supposed to be the party that's opposed to the Patriot Act.

But it is only a 90 day extension, then they have to vote again. Rand had enough leverage for that, but note the margin of the vote, it would have overcome a filibuster.

They've also traditionally been the party of national security. Many times there's a conflict between national security and defending the Constitution. I just wish Republicans would focus first on the latter.

My critter voted yea, but I'm not going to hold it against her as this is 90 days to discuss it instead of 3 more years. Now if she votes for 3 more years after that 90 days, that's a different story...

Wow. Kudos to Mike Lee. I knew there was a chance he'd be on the right side of this. But the fact that he did that as one of only two Republicans says a lot about him, especially since this was not one of the issues where people in our movement had a great deal of confidence about where he stood. I know it's early in their tenures there, but I'm ready to say that Rand and Lee are both far better senators than any senator who has been in that chamber for many years.

Don't you think that now is the time to "hold it against her" rather than in three months when she's voted for it to remain in place for 3 years?

This 3 months is a time to organize an anti-Patriot act campaign to target all senators/congressmen who voted yea, not wait around and hope they'll "see the light."

I just wanted to inform you of my extreme disapproval of your recent vote in favor of the patriot act extension. I have emailed you on numeorus occassions and you are well away of my feelings towards your positions and I suppose I should not be suprised, but this just further confirms my lack of faith in your support of the constitution and natural rights. Unless you begin acting like a true supporter of the Constitution and civil rights by changing your voting habits, including voting against the patriot act after the 90 day extension, I will continue to vote and speak against you.

I sent this email to my senator Wicker and I also sent an email to my other Senator Cochran.

Doubtful. And who here has the money to sue them anyways? We have 3 months to organize a movement against those who voted, out them and make sure they know, without a doubt, that a yea vote goes against both the Constitution and the will of the people.

Obviously a good opportunity for a bipartisan grassroots effort.

Currently on C-SPAN... rep. Sensenbrenner (R-WI) is yakking sticking up for the Patriot Act. Saying nothing in the bill violates constitutional rights. No complaints have been filed, and the one that was file on section 215, has been addressed. He constantly is saying for some reason that the courts and judicial system has found no violation of rights.

http://www.c-span.org/Live-Video/C-SPAN/

Sensenbrenner introduced the USA PATRIOT Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act) to the House on October 23, 2001.
Sensenbrenner did not write the USA PATRIOT Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act); the primary author was Assistant Attorney General of the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Assistant_Attorney_General) Viet Dinh (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viet_Dinh). In November 2004, Sensenbrenner and California Congressman Duncan Hunter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duncan_Hunter) objected to provisions of a bill that, among other things, created a Director of National Intelligence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Director_of_National_Intelligence), a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Commission_on_Terrorist_Attacks_Upon_the_ United_States).

In 2005, Sensenbrenner authored the Real ID Act (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_ID_Act), which requires additional scrutiny of citizenship before issuing drivers' licenses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driver%27s_license#United_States_and_Canada) and creates a federal database of state-issued identification. He attached the controversial act as a rider on military spending bill HR418. Subsequently, it was passed by the Senate without debate.

In March 2005, Sensenbrenner sided firmly with the parents and siblings in the Terri Schiavo case (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terri_Schiavo_case), who fought unsuccessfully in the federal courts to secure home care of their mentally-damaged daughter.

Sensenbrenner believes in criminal prosecution of broadcasters and cable operators who violate decency standards as opposed to the current FCC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Communications_Commission) regulatory methods.

I've never liked that guy so I wasn't surprised at all. I'm glad more are seeing him for what he is though. I'm more surprised my democrat senator was one of the 12. Still doesn't make up for a lot of his other votes, but 2/3 of Alaska voted against it. Murkowski was our only failure.
