I was pretty turned off by the VP of the NRA who was speaking.

He railed against the media starting out for their emotional stories about gun crime. Then he went right into telling emotional stories about gun crimes.

He told one story about an eight year old girl who was raped by a guy who just 4 hours before was let out on bail after being arrested for a federal gun crime.

How is that an argument against gun laws?

Then they had a staged 911 call meant to tear at the heartstrings of everyone there.
Woman on the phone calls 911...there's someone at the front door trying to break in, 911 operator tells her to run up to the bedroom and lock the door. The guy breaks in and comes upstairs, he breaks into the bedroom and the 911 operator tells her to tell the guy that she has the police on the phone. She tells him she has the police on the phone repeatedly...apparently the guy's just standing there doing nothing after going through all of the trouble of breaking down two doors. She keeps asking him "why are you here" "why are you here" "I have the police on the phone" "why are you here". The guy must've been standing at the bedroom door for about a minute. Then it cuts off. Stunned silence in the audience.

The NRA guy even had the balls to bring up the Virginia shooting. He failed to mention that the NRA helped to write up some legislation banning guns because of it.

The NRA is first and foremost a pro-NRA organization. That means they want to be beltway players. They play politics in a way that maximizes their ability to continue playing politics.

The whole 911 call was stupid to begin with and frankly im not even sure the point that was being made by the call. Were guns banned in her area??

I also recall that he was pushing for a law that would allow everybody to own a gun.

I couldn't believe that he didn't know that there already is one...a whole Amendment as a matter of fact.
