has anyone heard this too? If it is, we have a legit shot at winning Ames straw poll.

I've heard this too and I'm sure the establishment politicos in Iowa are telling him not to do this, so it remains to be seen. His thinking, I believe, is based on winning New Hampshire no matter who Iowa votes for and then going on the win everything else. And if the winner in Iowa was Mike Huckabee maybe he's right.
But what if its Ron Paul who wins Iowa?

Iowa is Huckabee territory. Romney is only a player in the straw poll if he buses in his drones, which we have to assume he will.

Smells like BS to let our guard down.
We have to get started on Iowa asap. Romney will go all out at Iowa. He won it in 2007.

I'm pretty sure Huckabee actually won Iowa in 2007.

He cannot focus on Iowa because if he finishes under #2 there, he is done. Since Huckabee will lock 1 or 2, then the risk is too great to try to compete in Iowa. Romney doesn't want to make the same mistake Hillary Clinton did last time. He'll probably focus on New Hampshire and the non-southern super tuesday states.

For those of you interested in Iowa politics listen to this recent Steve Deace podcast (http://www.whoradio.com/cc-common/mediaplayer/player.html?redir=yes&mps=deace.php&mid=http://a1135.g.akamai.net/f/1135/18227/1h/cchannel.download.akamai.com/18227/podcast/DESMOINES-IA/WHO-AM/2012%20straw%20poll%20podcast%20020711.mp3?CPROG=P CAST?CCOMRRMID&CPROG=RICHMEDIA&MARKET=DESMOINES-IA&NG_FORMAT=&NG_ID=&OR_NEWSFORMAT=&OWNER=&SERVER_NAME=www.whoradio.com&SITE_ID=1165&STATION_ID=WHO-AM&TRACK=) regarding his recent call-in/web caucus poll. He explains why Mitt will only put in a McCain effort into the Iowa Caucus. (Mitt has to import his caucus voters from the western and eastern border counties to central Iowa on one hot, steam day in Iowa.)
As for Huck - he's viewed as not being able to "win" Iowa - that is he won't be able to expand his base over last time thus it will viewed as a loss.
If you're really interested in Iowa politics I would highly suggest going through Steve Deace's podcasts (http://www.whoradio.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=deace.xml) over the last year or two (and do it pronto as he resigned from WHO radio last Friday and they could disappear soon). Listen to his discussion from Sept 1, 2010 with Wes Enis.
Also, go through and listen to the Mid-morning guy Jan Mickelson podcasts (http://www.whoradio.com/pages/pp_janmickelson.html) as well. FYI, Paul has a standing invitation to appear on his show once a month (since 2008) but for some reason Paul rarely comes on. (It's no excuse that that Paul is busy during 9 to 11:30 a.m. central time as I have it on good authority interviews are sometime prerecorded - like the night before.) - As explained to me it's like Paul is the star high school quarterback, a bit shy, and Jan is the cute cheerleader who loves Paul. Their friends the Iowa CFL (Dave - here on the boards and Drew Ivers) have gotten Paul to dance with Jan a couple of times but Paul never asks Jan for her (okay his) phone number. What's the problem???? I've heard Paul preaching to the choir on Alex Jones monthly but doesn't have time to preach on the Iowa radio sandblaster to convert new choir members here in Iowa. Very aggravating.

Oops. Brain fart. Romney was so well organized at the time that I remember him being the winner. Pretty powerful.
