I'm not surprised something like this happened--they were merely looking for something to avoid asking obvious/tough questions on--typical ad hominem; attack the person or his associations and forget about the actual data/argument/logic he's putting forth.

That said, if there's a similar hearing, in the future, and Paul uses someone else (let's say, Robert Murphy), they'll probably do one of two things: attack the Mises institute and attempt to associate with "fringe views", "neo-confederate ideas and defense", and "a strong anti-government and anarchic bent", or they'll they'll attempt to link that person, through the Mises Institute, to someone who is sympathetic to "neo-confederate" beliefs.
