Egypt's embattled regime has decided to give government employees a 15% raise in salaries and pensions as it seeks to bolster support amid mass protests demanding President Hosni Mubarak's ouster.

Monday's decision came during the first Cabinet meeting since the crisis erupted two weeks ago.

Finance Minister Samir Radwan says some 6.5 billion Egyptian pounds ($960 million) will be allocated to cover the increases, which will take effect in April for some 6 million employees.

Mubarak's regime has relied heavily on support from employees on its payroll, with clashes breaking out between pro-government thugs and protesters.

Meh , whatever .The people getting the raises are govt. employees loyal to the current government already , this is just a reward for the continued loyalty through the recent times ....

Peanuts..

Other than "peanuts", anyone with an understanding in economics know that this is a recipe for sure-fire immediate inflation. Merchants predict the pay increase and increase their prices as well. It happened oh-so-many times here in the UAE - whenever we hear that the government is about to "raise wages", we know when to increase our own rates.
