Meh.. go to southern california and take a drive along the coast.. thousands and thousands of people up and down the coast surfing every morning year around. Thousands of tourists in the water every day nearly year around. The birthing ground for great white sharks is off the channel islands, which are islands off the coast of southern california. Surfers don't ever get attacked around here. The last guy got attacked up at Surf Beach, which is up past point conception, technically not in southern california and is notoriously very sharky. The central and northern california coast are much more likely to have shark issues.. but if you go to Santa Cruz, again, hundreds of people in the water nearly every day, and no attacks on surfers ever.. it is barely outside of the "red triangle" which is known for having a large amount of white sharks and white shark attacks.

There was an attack about a quarter or half mile off the coast of so cal of a swimmer, and occasionally divers in Santa Cruz might be attacked.

Go up to San Francisco, you have surf beach.. there are great whites all over the place, I've heard of surfers seeing them while they are out there fairly regularly yet go there and you will see dozens of surfers every single day, not sure when the last time there was an attack.

I should be way more worried about sharks than anybody here on their vacation or taking the occasional dip in the ocean, and I'm not really worried. I'll even surf in sharky waters if the waves are good, but I don't see why anybody should be worried at all about surfing most areas that don't have the shark issues.

Luckily we don't have tiger sharks here, but they do have them in Hawaii and attacks there are still extremely rare. One of the attacks that received a lot of attention was this girl Bethany Hamilton, she had her arm bitten off, she was wearing a ring on a finger of that arm. That's not the only time this has happened, so if you go swimming in the ocean and you are worried about sharks, take off your rings and jewelry.

By the way, Bethany Hamilton still surfs, with one arm.

You should post a picture of that red triangle . Bottom line is Whites eat seals . A surfer on a board resembles a seal from below ...
