Anyone else watching the show "Boomtown" on Planet Green channel? They aired 4 episodes last night and will show new ones on Saturday nights. The show follows the citizens in a small North Dakota town as an oil rush happens.

Many of the citizens own the surface land as well as the mineral rights to the land beneath and are making big royalties off of the oil. Other citizens own only the surface rights to their land while some other individual (or group) owns the mineral rights to that land; these people have to allow drilling on their surface land but get no money from the oil production.

Was wondering if anyone else was watching and what you all think about it?

I haven't seen the show, but the moral of the story is certainly this: If you buy land, make damn good and sure you buy the mineral rights as well. Personally, I've always thought the whole "mineral rights" thing is kind of weird; it seems like the purchase of land ought to be inclusive of any rights to mining, oil extraction, and the like. But unfortunately it isn't, so caveat emptor.
